Many users are complaining that this program is not stealth:

and that both files and folders are created makes me wonder if settings aren't saved to AppData.

It should be noted that nothing is written to portable.xml.

I answered them under my non-logged-in alias "sandman", but had to log on to answer this... emergeDesktop
is portable after you create portable.xml. It only saves settings to %AppData% in the absence of this file.

portable.xml is a placeholder, an instruction for eD to drop into portable mode. When the file is blank, eD will save settings in its application folder. If you want to put eD in PortableApps Format (as I'll be doing soon), you can use an undocumented feature: put this in portable.xml and it'll save settings to ..\..\Data\Emerge Desktop.

Old thread update: running on Win7x86 did not come with good results. Toolbars are offset and it automatically shows everything in the tray menu even if you had some items hidden. If you have a lot of tray elements, that's a lot of screen real estate.
Because turning off the program requires a reboot, I'm a little confused why this was accepted as portable but it's a few years too late to recheck the test.
To disable the program:
By right clicking anywhere on the desktop (i.e. the background image or area) you will get a menu. Under the Settings menu, select the Change Desktop Shell option, and from the drop list select Windows Explorer and click on Change. Reboot or logoff to restart Windows, now with Explorer as shell.
