KuShellExtension

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

KuShellExtension

#1 Post by lautrepay »

Description: KuShellExtension is a Windows shell extension which adds custom entries into context menu (a.k.a. shell menu) in some applications like Windows Explorer - the stardard file manager in Windows.
It is highly configurable by a simple configuration file in XML format. It can generate submenus and display icons, which cannot be done by modifying registry.
It is designed to be as portable as possible, "portable" means it can be bring from one computer to another computer easily. Though it modifies the registry to register itself, but it doesn't save the settings there. This enables users use KuShellExtension in their USB drives.
Supports both x86 and x64 systems.

You mentioned KuShellExtension in this thread http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... f=1&t=8323

BTW, more info about KuShellExtension @ http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/k ... =Main_Page

Does it work?

Not yet. I tried with KuShellExtension and with Fast Explorer, but, in the case of XmPlay, I still can't communicate no orders to the player through DDE, and the command line switches are very limited for my purposes. And in relation to Winamp, I can't handle more than one file at the same time with Clamp.
But I'll keep on trying...

Hi, I recently emailed the author Kai-Chieh Ku at kjackieATgmailDOTcom, requesting him to join the discussion here if possible. Here is the reply:
Hi!

I don't have a portablefreeware account so let me reply you directly.

I'm glad to hear you like the toy I've created, that is still my daily driver. As you might noticed, I have not checked SF.net for a long time, because I have learned it was not (and won't be) adopted by many users. Users tend to be lazy to configure, and I am lazy to make a fancy and easier to use GUI (which was actually a planned feature).

In addition, many things stopped me further investing my time in it:
* It arrived at 2008, the same year Apple released iPhone 3G, and the ecosystem of the computers are completely changed. Even I am not using Windows desktop at home.
* SourceForge become a ghost town, I have documented the usage on SF.net hosted MediaWiki, but it was removed at some time I didn't noticed. This also made someone complains that there is no document at portablefreeware.

Anyway, I still occasionally update it to support newer OS or so. You may check it at the following places:
Binaries (Jenkins CI): https://ku.myftp.org/buildbot/job/KuShellExtension/
Sources: https://ku.myftp.org/~jackie/git/kushellext.git

If you just want latest binary you should prefer MinGW builds to vs2013's, because they are more portable (OS version wise).

Hopefully, this means that the author is still interested in keeping it running in the newer OS, at least for his own use. Contrary to his belief, the ability to use text file to configure is what attracted me to this proggy. It is far easier to correct/modify things in text file, than doing it through multiple click in the GUI.

Thanks 8)
(But, please, do reformat the author's email address in your post, in order for his mailbox not to be swamped with SPAM: kjackieATgmailDOTcom would do fine...)

BTW, KuShellExtension's database entry is at http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=2102.

Done, but I could find no option to edit the entry in the comments section. If it is possible from your end, kindly do so.
