You're generally very thorough about testing out a variety of software before deciding on something so I normally wouldn't question this, but I did find out today that Zim has functionality for a diary (and many other elements) via the Calendar function:

Additionally the program is quite mature, multi-platform, and uses drastically fewer resources (hovering around 22 megs on my Win7 machine).
