Registry Finder

#1 Post by Midas »

Haven't seen Registry Finder around, so I'll just leave this here... ;)
http://registry-finder.com/ wrote:Registry Finder is a small, fast and handy utility that searches the Windows registry and displays the results in a list. You can edit found items or jump to an item in RegEdit in a single click. Search results can be saved to a .reg or a text file. Registry Finder does not require installation. Just download and put it into any folder on HDD or USB drive and start the executable. The utility does not store any its data in the registry. It stores settings in the RegistryFinder.config file located in the same folder as the executable.

Download latest Registry Finder release (currently v1.6.1.0) 32 or 64 bits from http://registry-finder.com/.

FYI, included with Registry Finder is the 'NReg.exe' console utility, which documents a technique I've seen used by malware in the past...

Code: Select all

Adds or deletes hidden registry keys.

Usage: NReg <command> <key>

  Command: [add | delete]
      Key: ROOTKEY\Subkey
ROOTKEY: [HKLM | HKCU | HKCR | HKU | HKCC]
Subkey: The full name of a registry key under the selected ROOTKEY.

Keys with the null character in the name are not accessible by regedit and most
other registry editors, that use Window API. Though such keys are visible, their
 content is not.

To create a key with the null character, use the add command and specify '%00'
as part of the key name.

Examples:

NReg add HKCU\Unmodifiable%00\Invisible

Creates the Unmodifiable key and Invisible subkey. Regedit is able to display
the HKCU\Unmodifiable key, but fails to open it. The Invisible subkey is invisib
le for regedit.

The website link for 'Registry Finder' of PortableFreeware redirect to a russian hosting site.
Try to download from Afterdawn.com:
- Registry Finder 2.5 Installer (for Install and Portable mode): http://www.afterdawn.com/software/syste ... taller.cfm

Note_1
Installer (includes both 32-bit and 64-bit).
Note_2
It seems me that portable version are not no more developed (last build is 2.4 x32 and x64 bit).

@rbon: I confirm that our Registry Finder's entry (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=2676) download link is currently pointing to a Russian hosting company webpage; unfortunately, the Afterdawn alternative link you provided isn't producing any v2.5, only last known v2.4...

EDIT: this is rather confusing, but I was able to download v2.5 portable package (untested!) by clicking the links present in the footer of the page you mentioned (leading either to http://www.afterdawn.com/software/syste ... finder.cfm or http://www.afterdawn.com/software/syste ... 64-bit.cfm)... :?

OTOH, Softpedia is listing v2.5 for Registry Finder, at http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Regi ... ppov.shtml.

Sadly, its download links are also 404... :(

Version 2.50 requires CrashSender1402.dll and CrashSender1402.exe to run. The crash reports are saved to \AppData\Local\CrashRpt\UnsentCrashReports\RegistryFinder_2.5.0.0

It's some kind of DNS problem. I can't connect either but that's not because it's actually down (see http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ ... finder.com ).

Sadly Softpedia lists it but doesn't host it, meaning it's still going to the same unconnected website. The best I could find was afterdawn, which has a slightly out of date version posted:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/syste ... finder.cfm

Surprisingly, this morning I was able to reach the Registry-finder.com site and do the download. Internet remains a parallel world with its many mysterious ways! ...

Works for me now. Didn't work last time I tried. I think it's just a bandwidth cap coming into play here.
