WebVersions

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

WebVersions

#1 Post by guinness »

Added To TPFC: http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1534

Disclaimer: Images used from the creator of this software. (I have linked from their site and no permission was given, so I will take out if requested.)

a) To add an application, right click on an empty space in the 'All' tab and select 'New'.

Image

b) This will show a new edit box to enter all the relevant information. So working from top to bottom, enter the name of the application e.g. '1by1'

Image

c) From there enter 'My Version' that you currently have installed, this is crucial because it will analyse the web version against your version and notify if both are a mismatch. (I tend to miss the 'Known Version' because I couldn't see a real benefit in helping me keep up to date.)

d) If you want to separate your applications into sub sections e.g. 'Internet, System' etc then enter in the corresponding tab names box. You can seen an example of this in the image above. To note the 'All' tab is shown by default, so there is no way of deleting this.

e) With the URL, paste the URL where the application is updated and shows the current version of the application e.g. 'http://mpesch3.de1.cc/1by1.html', because the author of the software always updates this page. Good advice is look for a ChangeLog page with the newest application at the start and oldest at the bottom. I suggest copying some of my examples to get a better idea.

f) Enter the version that is shown on the page e.g. '1.68' (at time of writing) and click 'Find' What the application will do is search the SourceCode of the website and find '1.68,' select advance options and it will show you how it went about this.

Image

g) As you can see what the application does is search from top to bottom, in this example it will look for version:</b>, once it finds this it will assume the number is next and stop before if finds , (comma). Its that simple!

h) Once in a while the website owner will update their SourceCode, so repeat the steps above and it will rearrange the conditions for the search of the version.

i) If you want to sort your applications in alphabetical order, right click on the 'All' tab and select 'Sort by Name', it will update in all the tabs you have.

Image

j) To check for new versions, click on the button 'Web Update' located on the main page. If you want to check just a specific application, edit the intended application by right clicking and selecting 'Edit' and from there click on the smaller version of 'Web Update'.

DONT FORGET TO SAVE!

k) A good tip is if an update is found double click on the 'My Version' section next to your application e.g. '1by1 is now 1.68 not 1.64 you currently have installed, so double click on the 1.64. What this will do is copy the web version across, so no manual editing involved. To undo the change double click again.

So I have found what I was looking for by reading the Ghacks piece and searching WebMon in this forum, this then led me to WebVersions - http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... lit=WebMon which saves the files in the applciation folder, but I dont know about reg keys.

Keeping software up to date is always a good idea for reasons of both features and security. Hopefully Checker http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... ile&u=1224 posts to this thread as that dude catches stuff early and often.

On a related note, two related items that might help with the process of keeping software up to date:
However, MANY software developers don't report version changes to some kind of central database so a website update notifier tool like the one you mention from Ghacks will still be necessary to keep on top of it all.

So for the last couple of days I have painstakingly entered all my software into WebVersions, but I think the initial time will pay off.

The software is very easy to use, but it can sometimes depend on the website developer of the particular software. I found that 99% of the Portable Software I have is easy to keep up to date with. It doesn't save any GUI changes in the WebVersions.txt file, but merely stores the database info. You add sites that contain the most recent version number, by selecting the right mouse button and clicking new. The software is intended more for the professional user, this is due to the fact there are limited instructions on how to use the software ( not always a bad thing!)

Image

Example: CCleaner
This analyses the special builds page of CCleaner, it then scans top to bottom when it finds a 'v' it will presume the version number is to the right of 'v' e.g. v2.23.999.

Code: Select all

CCleaner;2.23.999;2.23.999;http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds;false; ; v;;;;;;
Example: PicPick
This analyses the download page of PicPick, it will search for the text 'What's New in' and again presume the version number is to the right.

Code: Select all

PicPick;2.1.1;2.1.1;http://picpick.wiziple.net/download;false;<;What's New in ;;;;;;
WebVersions
Version: 3.1
Stealth: Yes
Download

This is fantastic: If we could set up some kind of web version of this, it would be a whole separate section of PFW. We would stop relying on our users to manually check out web sites and report back and instead have an easy and automated system.

At some point, you should post the config files (or whatever) you've done somewhere. This is great work.

This was what I was thinking too, have another menu after stealth for example.

So here is a teaser... :)

Okay so when you add the following to the WebVersions.txt file, Doc version 3.1;; must be the first line, else WebVersions will not display any of the txt file in the GUI App.

A tip for updating your version, if there is a newer version simply double click on the old version you have and it will update to the newest web version. There are 18 tips that can be viewed in the bottom left hand corner.

Here is 90% of the applications hosted at nirsoft.net, I call this the NirSoft Collection...

If there is a better way then please post. I hope Checker doesn't mind. I will still look out for the updates in Portable Freeware.

Who is the developer of this tool? I'm working on a software updater for our Suite and I'd like to compare our software to improve them. My tool is available in the last Lupo PenSuite version and at the moment works fine with software stored on my website. Tests and advices are welcome!

Thanks for breaking these into pieces. You're welcome topost this on the kitchensinkport wiki (which I'm pretty sure I gave you access to) if you'd like as they're in the same vein as the CAFE config files posted there.

@Lupo73 - The software is developed by Don't know his name, plus if you look here Little gems they cite PortableFreeware.com so they must be on this site?!

Plus Lupo73, I had a look at your download manager (good use of AutoIT) and from only having the Zero version (slow internet connection) it seems it will only look at the update versions of the software in the suite and not any extra apps I installed? Or is it possible to configure. The basics of this software is it searches the source code of the website, so if I say ver, it will search through the source code until it finds ver and presume the number is next to it. I think using the IESourceCode UDF with a search function would do the trick, but I am a novice at AutoIT.

@webfork, I will do that, was waiting for you to confirm if you would want this information in your wiki! Plus there is no license in the download so could you not include it in your next version as a temp measure for checking applications.

I think I have stumbled on what potentially could help alot of PFWC users! :)
