I'm not sure what the portableapps.com folks were smoking since Miranda IM is already quite portable. I was actually going to update ClamWin with the "portable" version but I'm not sure how Andrew wants to handle it.

Portable Filezilla is listed in the Filezilla entry, Portable VLC Player is listed in the VLC entry, Portable ClamWin is listed in the ClamWin entry, and all of these entries have links to the respective portableapps pages for them. I think this is a much better approach than cluttering the database with entries for different distrobutions of the same application, and I'm pretty sure that's why Andrew chose this method.

Isn't the same thing true of FileZilla (and most of the other apps mentioned)? I believe that there is a setting that specifies to store the settings in files rather than the registry (secure mode versus something else, which escapes me right now).
I can only assume that some optimizations have been made to limit writing to usb media to preserve media life? (which I know to be true of portable Firefox)

Ah, that's true enough. Though I'm not entirely certain that Miranda is one of the big offenders on USB thrashing, it seems most folks don't have a problem with it. Just seems silly, since Miranda was designed to be small, fast, and runnable from a floppy from the get-go.

Dude, you read my mind!

Well, the "Portability Note" for Portable Miranda IM says:

Quote:
Miranda IM itself is actually portable without modification. It will be slightly larger (1MB vs 2MB) and will keep the settings in the base directory unless you alter the INI files. Portable Miranda IM is made available mainly for the convenience of users of other portable apps as it allows the same directory structures without modification or configuration changes.

For completeness sake, I will add a link under the Miranda IM entry to Portable Miranda. No harm done I guess, and the reader can decide which version he wants to have, just like the others.

Personally eg. Filezilla, I use the official version instead of the portable version since I prefer to get the latest version sooner.
