Good news!
I found that you can reduce TextMaker / PlanMaker exe size by 1/3 w/out any speed loss.
Just use this dirty little hack. It optimizes executable structure and wipes the rubbish that makes it so big.

Has anyone provided stats for this? m^(2)

I know m^(2) says 1/3 for the .exe but have you tried to compress the result?

I would like to see what the combination of this "Hack" and UPX would be.

I would also like to know about file optimization including removal of foreign language files etc

Also does anyone know which, if any files are less than useful and can be removed? (I mean the less obvious ones like duplicate English files; such as a foreign country English language file including template, spell check, dictionary files etc)

If all of these are done what could the total result be?

Yes, I tried to UPX it. Result: 2579456 B
Exactly the same as before. Why? UPX does the same things before compression.

I played with removal of unnecessary stuff. 22317422 B total with UK ENG everything+Polish hyphenation, no UPX. You can surely remove equation editor and templates too. I removed unicows.dll, but it's needed on Win 9x, so take care.
I'm not sure how about things like .tlb. If anyone can say that it's surely unnecessary, please do it. :)

WARNING:
It's not so good to remove hyphenation files for foreign languages.
I just downloaded some (English) word document and was welcomed by an error message that it cannot start hyphenation for Greek.

Softmaker Ofice Suite 2008 - free licenses

#21 Post by GeddichNixan »

Softmaker is currently giving away free licenses of its "Softmaker Office Suite 2008".

Homepage: http://www.loadandhelp.de/home-en.html
Download link: http://www.softmaker.de/lh-down-en.htm

The download is available after a short registration (name, email and country are required).

It can be made portable just as the 2006 version. In order to get a portable version do the following:

- install the program first (I installed it into a Sandbox)
- there is an executable "usb*.exe" (sorry for the asterisk I obviously removed the original installation too early) it will move a portable version of the software to your portable device
- BTW you do not actually need a portable device connected to your computer. In the drop down list of available devices all storage devices are listed. Choose one of them (a HDD partition for example) and the app folder will be placed on that device (root is defaul)

Enjoy!

P.S. It is a charity action. For each download Softmaker donates Euro 0,10 to a charity organization.

i have the ashampoo, but is softmaker that different? I thought one was basically the paid verison of the other (or of open office, i forget which)

they are all the same right? or does one work better than another. I liked ashampoo for the small size but not sure how much function it loses out for being small

I think Ashampoo Office is the rebranded version of SoftMaker Office (same functionality). I didn't compare them, tho.

This is the best office suite out there in my opinion. I have been using Softmaker Office Suite 2006 and have been pleased. Keep in mind I also have 2008, but I just like knowing that 2006 works fine for me so why upgrade. Nonetheless, I keep version 2008 just in case. And now, 2008 is free. Nice. I highly recommend this download to anyone looking to use an excellent office suite that is not bloated. Opens all micro$oft word and excel files.

I am using 2006 portable.

Feliz Navidad!

Well, the 2008 version is not generally free. It is a time limited offer until the 31th of december.

BTW, 2008 is almost twice as big as 2006 (81 MB to 46 MB on my computer), so those who have limited capacities should stick with 2006.

Softmaker Office 2008 for free until 31 Dec 2009

#28 Post by the accountant »

Here is the offer

http://loadandhelp.de/home-en.html

For each download they give money to charity.

To make the Portable USB version install the software, then go to Startmenu, Softmaker, Utilities and select Install on USB Stick. I always install on my second partition and have a permanent portable sitiing on my hard drive which is never lost when i reinstall the OS.

I believe it is portable since portable.txt is included in the Portable version.

Portable TextMaker Viewer 2010

#29 Post by vixblu »

First post on the forums, I've been very happy with the apps and great info I've found here so far :D My pendrive is finally getting functional and easy to manage.

I've read a recommendation on Lifehacker about TextMaker Viewer 2010 and via google search I landed here again, I was curious if there was a portable version of the TextMaker Viewer 2010, and although above post wasn't helpful for that I looked further and came across this bit of info at the developers site:
Tips & Tricks for TextMaker Viewer
http://www.softmaker.com/english/tipstmv_en.htm

TextMaker Viewer 2010 is a free download at www.officeviewers.com and allows you to open, view, and print documents in many word processing formats (DOC, DOCX, TextMaker, OpenDocument, RTF etc.).

Like the applications in SoftMaker Office, TextMaker Viewer 2010 can be set up in a way that it will run from a USB flash drive without the need to install it. This way, you can run it on any Windows PC directly off the flash drive and be certain that it does not install itself on the host computer.

Here is how to make TextMaker Viewer ready for this "portable mode":
  • Download the latest revision of TextMaker Viewer.
  • Go to www.7-zip.org and download the "7-Zip" unpack utility. Run this utility on the installation file of
  • TextMaker Viewer and let it unpack the files to the USB flash drive.
  • Ready!
I've tested it, and it works. However, I don't have the knowledge (yet) to check if it's "stealth".
