Although Firefox is clearly the preferred browser of the two here on the site, a lot of my friends have been switching to Chrome. Lifehacker just posted an interesting article comparing them: Why I’ve Switched From Chrome to Firefox 4.

For those users who may have heard about the Google Chrome integrated adblocking service, it was of course too good to be true.

It was supposed to "strip out ads that provide bad experiences for users" (WSJ.com) but really it's just a way for "Google to crush its few remaining competitors by pre-installing an ad zapper that it controls to the most common web browser. That’s a great way for a monopoly to remain a monopoly."

All customized settings (including extensions) get lost - on most chromium-based browsers - not only when You copy the potable browser to another PC, but also if You plan to use the potable browser directly from the USB stick on another PC (the moment you run the browser from the USB stick on another PC - the USB stick located customized settings are lost).

Multi-platform FOSS Alkasir (https://alkasir.com/) might be of interest to Chrome users, which it lists as a requirement...

also there is the spying and profiling issue - they once claimed their motto was "do no evil" and then it turned out they were getting rich by selling all your personal profile info

Not to defend Alphabet here, but as much as as I abhor censors (I was born in a country that had to endure arbitrary censorship for half a century), I think TPFC should remain as content agnostic as possible. Today's evil is tomorrow's necessary resource.

Got another major flaw out for Chrome and Edge. So I'm not clear on whether or not this affects Chromium-based browsers -- really a question of whether or not they're using the V8 Javascript engine. I'd be very surprised if it didn't also affect X-Chromium.

It's standard guidance here: update and keep updating.

I normally don't follow topics like this but I'm realizing that a huge number of programs we've highlighted over time use Chrome internals. I don't know if any of those are affected. Also, this is a cross-platform attack and the second critical zero-day this year for this browser.

I have put an additional screenshot online for Chrome. It shows the browser being used with an “enhanced” PDF fillable tax form. There are now two frames in the screenshot file for Chrome.

If anyone would like me to give the reason for adding it or other information, feel free to post a request to this forum topic.

Also, I am thinking about a further change. For the “Runs on” section, I think Windows 7 and Wine should be removed. The last Chrome version that supported Win 7 was 109. A note could be added suggesting Win 7 users get X-Chromium version 109 or earlier (105 is the most recent X-Chromium version).

Chrome has a native Linux version, so there is little or no reason to run Wine, which is a Windows compatibility layer for Linux.

Update: I removed Windows 7 from the “Runs on” section. I also added a note for Win XP to 8. PA’s Google Chrome Portable page has a Download Details section with links for these Win versions.
