WinStars - planetarium

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

WinStars - planetarium

#1 Post by teobromina »

This is a nice stellarium program: Winstars

http://site.voila.fr/winstars/english/index2.html

The version 2 is shareware, is more complete and has a Solar System mode (similar to Celestia) in adition to the planetarium, but version 1 is freeware and still quite good.

It can run without install and without need to modify the INI file (that is to say: it can run from an ISO which is a read only device).
It writes in the registry entries about crypto and MRU.

I hope it is useful.

Comments are welcome.

*JT.

Old topic update: WinStars site is now at http://www.winstars.net/.

Previous freeware version (v1.031R0) still available for download from http://www.winstars.net/english/version1.html.

Current v2 (shareware, portability status unknown -- but registration is only EUR 6, plus see below...) screenshot:

Only some secondary functions are disabled (high resolution textures, the Tycho 2 catalogue) until you purchase a user’s license. Version 1 remains available as freeware. You would like to have the complete version but you find that 7 Euros is really too expensive? Well, send me a short, sympathetic message (with the subject 'free access code') and you will receive your access code for free ;-)

@Mod: not really sure about this, but topic should probably be moved...

Winstars v3.0.100 released 2019-11-19 (changelog at https://winstars.net/en/changelog/).

I am still undecided about this:
WinStars is shareware. This means that you may use it freely. However, certain functions (As the access to the entire Gaia DR2 catalogue, the high resolution textures, the DSS function and the supplementary modules) are temporarily disabled. If you wish to use the complete version of the software, you should purchase a user's licence (this license is valid for the Window version). The full version of WinStars 3 is free for Linux!

BTW, a recent Ghacks.net review can be found at:
