GeoSetter

#1 Post by radi8 »

GeoSetter is a freeware tool for Windows for showing and changing geo data of image files (e.g. images taken by digital cameras) it also replaces "the old "Exifer" which means that you can edit all Exif data.

* Reads and writes the formats JPEG and TIFF as well as camera RAW formats DNG (Adobe), CRW and CR2 (Canon), NEF (Nikon), MRW (Konica Minolta), PEF (Pentax), ORF (Olympus) and RAF (Fujifilm)
* Uses ExifTool from Phil Harvey for writing data
* Shows existing geo coordinates and tracks on embedded Google Maps map (requires internet connection)
* Setting geo data by using embedded Google Maps map (requires internet connection) or by entering known values for coordinates and altitude directly
* Automatic filling of location IPTC fields and altitude values (requires internet connection)
* Editable IPTC data (IPTC-NAA/XMP)
* Possibilty to change taken date of images
* Synchronization with track files (NMEA, GPX, PLT and Sony LOG)
* Synchronization with already geo tagged images with buddy images (e.g. between RAW images and their corresponding JPEG images)
* Localizable user interface - English, German, French, Italian, Swedish, Czech, Spanish, Danish, Dutch, Russian and Norwegian language is available at the moment

GeoSetter is comletely free!
The portable version writes nothing to the registry. You have to add an emty file named config.ini into the folder with GeoSetter.exe. Thats it.
You find geosaetter on http://www.geosetter.de/en/index.html :)

This is a great piece of portable software. Just create the config.ini like radi8 says.

If you allow it to connect online, it will create a single registry entry:

HKEY_USERS\ ? \Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\GlobalUserOffline

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

GeoSetter is at version 3.4.16.
http://www.geosetter.de/en/changes/

Dl the portable .zip package @ http://www.geosetter.de/en/download/
Create an empty config.ini file in the application directory.

Writes GeoSetter log file and cache-exiftool to AppData\Local\Temp

The registry key I found was under "Tracing" (Win 7).

The program works pretty well -- I'm impressed.

Note that to get the map function to work, you have to both have a picture with GPS location data written on it and then go into File - Settings - Map and set the URL to http://www.geosetter.de/map_google.html

(more info: http://www.geosetter.de/en/falsche-url- ... on-3-4-16/)

Thanks smaragdus.

Quick note to report that, after looking at GeoSetter settings in a quick test run, the Misc settings tab informs that free GPSBabel software is needed for some tracking purposes.

GPSBabel can be downloaded from http://www.gpsbabel.org/download.html#downloading.

Sadly, there's only an installer package for Windows but luckily, it can be easily (Uni)extracted.

Furthermore, as only the command line version is needed, here's the list of minimum files required to make it work:
  • - gpsbabel.exe
    - icudt51.dll
    - icuin51.dll
    - icuuc51.dll
    - libgcc_s_dw2-1.dll
    - libstdc++-6.dll
    - libwinpthread-1.dll
    - Qt5Core.dll
It's advisable to copy those to a 'GeoSetter\tools\gpsbabel' sub-folder and indicate it (thus: '.\tools\gpsbabel\gpsbabel.exe') in the above mentioned settings field. According to online help, should you need to set additional configuration options for GPSBabel, you can do so with an "-p gpsbabel.ini" command-line parameter.

Edit: this WAS a draft extract process but I realized it didn't make any sense so I reworded it as a question:

---

Thanks Midas. Good stuff. So if we created an entry, I put together some draft extract steps. Where would the GPSBabel step go?
  1. Download installer
  2. Uniextract
  3. From the menu, select File - Settings - Map and set the URL to "http://www.geosetter.de/map_google.html"
Optionally, delete all files save for those listed in this post.

  • Looks fine as it is. 8)

 Alternatively, I'd bump your 3. up to 4. and insert the last paragraph of my previous post as the new 3...

After almost 2 years without updates new version of GeoSetter was released- 3.5. I am glad that the program is not abandoned. The developer is working on version 4.
