From the help of the latest version the author states it is possible to run portable.
And that he is open to suggestions to improve this mode of use
By default Xinorbis will store the user preference to the registry every time it is closed down. In order to stop all registry access create a file called custom.ini and place it in the the same folder as the xinorbis.exe file.
The custom.ini should be a text file with the following structure;
[main]
pm=1
This will tell Xinorbis to operate in "portable mode", disabling all registry access. This will mean though, for the time being, that preferences and user settings WILL NOT be saved.

I downloaded the ZIP archive and unzipped it. I added the custom.ini, as stated here and in the help file, before the first start. Xinorbis then wrote 6 keys and 105 values to the registry (HKU) and added the file C:\WINDOWS\xinorbis3.ini.
Portable, maybe, but not without a trace.

It might be time to take another look at this utility.
The last post by Kea referred to version 3.5.1 (Jan12)
Several additions have been made to Xinorbis to make it operate more efficiently as a "portable application".
The latest version is 3.7.1
C:\WINDOWS\xinorbis3.ini is not created according to my test.
For more information see the help pages in the program.
As Jzilla stated, the author makes it clear that he is amenable to options/suggestions regarding the portability of the program.

Even though I followed those instructions it still wrote to the registry.

I did not test Registry entries because I had to run Xinorbis in order to get at the Help file which explained 'custom.ini'.
I had not seen the PFC thread at that time.
If it still does write entries then that's a pity; it seems a useful utility.
I have emailed the author pointing out these concerns so perhaps an explanation or an upgrade might be forthcoming.
If he comments in this thread all well and good. Otherwise I'll keep you posted.

Just to show how responsive the author is, there is a new version on his site.
Don't worry about version numbers; he hasn't got around to sorting that out.
The File Date of the new version is 25/6/2008.
It has fixed the problem or so I am led to believe.

Please note since v6 Xinorbis has now two versions:
* Trial (neverending, but advanced options are restricted and Xinorbis will save to the File History database but you won't be able to use that data)
* Full (paid)

@bassiliin: Thank's for the info!
Alan Freshney is a good guy that puts tremendous effort into his softwares. This move was unavoidable. I really hope his educational softwares will remain free to use!
P.S. I can't find the info about the price (paypal link is wrong) ... anyone?

Xinorbis seems to be an useful and powerful (utility, now again) freeware -- already in TPFC database (
