Colors

#1 Post by smaragdus »

Preamble
There are good free and portable colour pickers and palette managers but when I came upon a new promising tool I usually share it with the community.

Synopsis
A simple application for managing color palettes.
This program was made for my private use, but it may also be useful to someone.
Features
  • Colour picker - picked colours are shown in different colour formats- RGB, CMYK, HTML, BGR, HSL, C++ HEX, Pascal HEX, Pascal INT;
  • Colour values can be pasted from clipboard;
  • Preview with sample text;
  • Unlimited number of picked colours can be added to palettes, which can be saved to file;
  • Context menu in Color palette- Select all colors, Remove selected colors, Clear palette;
  • Built-in sample palettes;
  • Stay on top;

Portability
Colors (as of version 1.0 Beta 2) is portable by design- settings are saved in INI file (Colors.ini) inside program folder.

Instructions
  • Download the archive (Colors.zip);
  • Extract the archive to a folder of your choice;
  • Run the executable (Colors.exe);
Requirements
Colors should run on WIndows XP or higher.

License
I couldn't find any license information, I suppose that Colors is unrestricted freeware (donations accepted).

Note
Once I had an argument with the developer- Jacek Pazera, but of course I respect his work.
The program is not big- 3.28 MB uncompressed and it is not heavy on resources- on my machine it uses about 17 MB of RAM.
I created a tiny gallery.

Kudos to smaragdus for this comprehensive introduction.

I am not much impressed by the program itself, however. What I like about it is the sample preview in the bottom-left corner with the text color in shades of gray from white to black. That's a feature I have seen nowhere else so far.

Other than that, it compares poorly with the other alternatives I've been using over the years.
Color picking is a tedious procedure with many unnecessary clicks, it doesn't let me pick a custom text color, no sliders or color wheels to quickly mix/adjust custom colors. Tiny fonts in the list, not customizable, not zoomable. It remembers almost nothing from call to call, not the last used palette, not the drill-down states of the sections on the left side. The layout of screen elements wastes a lot of real estate.

@FileHandler
The program is in early development (still Beta). If you have ideas and suggestions for enhancements I suppose you may contact the developer directly.
