Paranoia Text Encryption & S.S.E. File Encryptor

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Paranoia Text Encryption & S.S.E. File Encryptor

#1 Post by Pony »

I cannot seem to find Paranoia Text Encryption or S.S.E. File Encryptor from http://www.paranoiaworks.mobi/ listed here.

Are they suitable for inclusion? Image

  • Cross-platform
    Zip format
Some versions require/use Java; the others don't

Softpedia lists it as closed-source freeware: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/E ... tion.shtml

One of the screenshots however clearly requires Java.

I wrote something up on how I feel about security tools: http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... =1&t=22237 ... this program checks off some of the boxes (among them simplicity) but usually Java programs don't integrate well with external programs. It's copy, paste, encrypt, copy paste where with native programs it might be just a global hotkey (ctrl+alt+s or something similar).

Still interesting. Thanks for the suggestion.

Paranoia Text Encryption for PC is not free:

S.S.E. File Encryptor is not free:

Another low developer who uses open-source resources to build his programs disguising them as freeware trying to peel some money off naive users.

More about PRO.

It seems the developer is not capable of selling his stuff outside Google Play and App Store.

They are "freemium" programs: free with strong encryption ciphers such as Blowfish-448, AES-256, TwoFish-256 and Serpent-256; use of Shacal2-512 and Threefish-1024 requires payment.
I suggest that, if being "freemium" is a problem, then Pop Peeper -- a program I like and use -- be removed forthwith from the Portable Freeware catalogue.

As you suggest, it's not an issue on this site: http://www.portablefreeware.com/faq.php#license

2nd point (Java)
There are different versions: so, I believe, Java is NOT required.
Text Encryption
  • Java Version:
PTE-PC.zip (Paranoia Text Encryption for PC (version 12R4D), Cross Platform (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, ...) - runnable JAR File (Java))
  • Non-Java Version:
PTE_Windows.zip (Paranoia Text Encryption for Windows (version 12R4D))
File Encryption
  • Java Version:
SSEFilePC.zip (GUI and CMD-line Version of the File Encryption for PC (version 12R3E/C), Cross Platform (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, ...) - runnable JAR Files (Java) )
  • Non-Java Version:
SSEFileGUI_Windows.zip (GUI Version of the File Encryption for Windows (version 12R3E))
1st point (closed-source)
The Paranoia Works site clearly says on its webpages for these programs that they are "open source" and, indeed, this seems to be the case.
The bottom half of the downloads page has links to the source code of its programs, including: PTE-PC_SRC.zip (P.T.E. for PC (12R4D) Source Code) and SSEFilePC_SRC.zip (S.S.E. File Enc. for PC (12R3E) Source Code).

True - I didn't see that. However, I feel like being "open" means more than just the code: the license status, Java requirement, and how to build could be clearer.

For reference, here's their license, which I believe is just MIT:

On Java: that isn't a deal breaker since we have Java programs on the site and the encryption components of many Java tools have been well-tested, but some clarity around that would be important before we added this to the site.
