Also Otter, a project by former Opera forum members. Tetzchner (the one-time Opera CEO) apparently wants to make money from the new browser (presumably through search revenue), but I can't see how with what would be a virtually non-existent marketshare. Some think this doesn't bode well for the project's future, but we'll see.

It also has a long way to go before it can catch up with the feature set Presto included. Still looking forward to the progress of both browsers though

I was about to post it. Vivaldi looks very promising so far. Don't know if it will be able to replicate Opera 12's featureset, but this technical preview already looks more like Opera (12) than Opera (Blink) itself. Yes, I'm excited!

I just came across the Ghacks review today and decided to quickly test it. The installer has a standalone option, though I haven't really tested whether or not it's truly Portable to its counterpart. The impression I get is it's kind of meant to mimic what Opera was before version 15 came into play, which I really haven't had a problem with since I use Opera 26 (now 27) on a regular basis.

This must be quite embarrassing for Opera Blink devs.

I tested the weekly build no. 1.0.94.2 (now TP2) and got some interesting results. My previous statement that the first TP was portable is not entirely accurate.
It saves the profile folder wherever it was installed the first time (I used "Standalone" option during the process as recommended for portable use), so you can't really move the app somewhere else on your HDD, because the Profile folder always "stays behind". It might work for installation on a USB stick, but I didn't test that.

There is a file named stp.viv (where vivaldi.exe is) in which the installation path is saved in absolute format (I hope they'll change this). You can manually edit it to solve this portability issue.

Also, regarding the title of this topic, why is it called an alternative to Opera? I think it's an alternative for any other browser out there.

Although I certainly hope that Vivaldi follows in the footsteps of Opera since so many folks were a big fan of that browser, I've been really surprised by all the non-open source browsers that keep coming out.  With even Microsoft getting nagged to open the code to their browser to make it compete, I can't understand all the non-open browsers coming from an open source (Chrome-based) camp.  

Now there's Opera, Vivaldi, SlimJet, Maxthon, and Sleipnir.  The only exceptions are two some-junk-removed versions of Chrome and then a lightweight QupZilla.  What the hell?
