Movie Explorer

#1 Post by smaragdus »

Movie Explorer is a movie catalogue program which supports automatic import from IMDb.

Movie Explorer about:
View information about the movies stored on your computer. (Windows)

Movie Explorer portable:
Movie Explorer is portable by design, all settings are stored in XML files inside program folder (Database.xml, Preferences.xml) which also contains Cache, Languages and Themes sub-folders.

Movie Explorer license:
Movie Explorer is open source, the source code can be downloaded from GitHub, I couldn't find any particular information about its license.

Movie Explorer note:
Movie Explorer is tiny, easy and fast. I couldn't find a way to edit the default categories (Movies & TV)- when adding source directories one needs to add a category, when I added Movies it was duplicated, so I had to change it. If I am missing something please correct me. Also

1. You can only add local files to the database (unlike EMDB).
2. At first start the programm added all files that are in my Video folder to the database and searched additional info in the IMDb database. I don't like this behaviour.
3. This is the first update of the software in two years.

It lacks many features that are in EMDB http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=2758

@Ennovy
All what you said is true. About 2- I never use Windows default folders so I deleted it from the database immediately. I don't like such behavior either.

EMDB is my favourite program of this kind but I think it is always better that we have alternatives.
In my tests it turned out that EMDB & Movie Explorer use almost equal resources but I got the impression that Movie Explorer is a bit faster in retrieving information from IMDb but my tests weren't professional by any means.

Agreed but Movie Explorer is not a real alternative for EMDB when features are compared.
Before EMDB I used Personal Video Database but that's abandoned: http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1343
Also Ant Movie Catalog has not been updated in two years (http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=873)

Movie Explorer at version 0.84c, changes:
*Fixes Broken Cover Images!

*Content Rating Added
*Runtime in hours,min
*Changed storyline to summary. it's usually better
*Finds movie in directory at load time, not runtime - so file size is displayed more often

Experimental changes (set in preferences file - shut down program before editing it)
*Remembering where you are in each movie, displaying it, and restarting at that point (requires VLC)
All Downloads
