Given that the portable version of Atom we're listing is now over a year old, I started digging into a possible way to make the official version portable. Here are the steps I tried to make it work, so far no luck.

1. Scroll down to the Latest Release box (in green) and download the zip version for your operating system (either atom-windows.zip or atom-x64-windows.zip for 64-bit).
2. Extract the Atom folder to a folder of your choice
3. Download the atom.zip folder and extract it's contents to the application folder ( .atom folder should be in the same location as atom.exe)
4. Launch atom.exe
5. When prompted to register as default atom:// URI handler, select No, Never

The ZIP file is attached to this entry. It's literally an empty folder because it's non-simple to generate a folder starting with a period in explorer.

Status: not portable, still insists on writing to \Users\USERNAME\.atom

Old thread update: Atom has unfortunately been discontinued in favor of Visual Studio Code by Github:
