I have seen that Gareth Flowers creates a new build few time after new official release (April 15, 2016).
The release 1.7.1 (not portable) has been published on GihHub:

It's cool. The softpedia changelog indicates that releases have been pretty rapid so we should expect it to be a little behind.

The program download is gigantic but this is pretty common among open source, cross-platform tools. Regardless, more than one of my friends have been saying very nice things about it so I'm very inclined to add it to the site. It's on the list.

Atom currently has some nice packages available for working with LaTeX documents (these work in concert with a TeX distribution like TeX Live, of course):

latex (compiling)
language-latex (syntax highlighting)
latex-tools (a port of Sublime Text's excellent LaTeX Tools)
latex-plus (compiling + project management)

There are some more I haven't tried yet:

latexer/latex-autocomplete (autocompletion)
latex-friend (various useful utilities)

And, as noted in the MarkDownEdit thread, the pdf-view package lets you view compiled PDFs right in the editor. An external viewer like SumatraPDF can also be used.

So Atom could be considered a replacement/alternative for LaTeX IDEs like TeXmaker, TeXstudio, TeXworks (default editor in MiKTeX/TeX Live), WinShell, etc. It's included in the Big List, along with Emacs and gVim.

Damn son, that DB rating is brutal :p I guess it only recently went up though.

Tried the non-portable version recently but wasn't at all fond of its auto install, addition of 'Open with Atom' in /every/ file context menu, and the settings are rather sprawled everywhere. I'll stuck with Sublime for the time being.

If you like Atom, you might want to try Brackets by Adobe instead. It's less hefty at around 120MB. Brackets Portable can be found on Github as well:

If you want to go lighter, use Sublime Text, which is around 30MB. If you want to go even lighter, use Notepad++ or AkelPad.

Interesting thanks. I haven't heard of anyone using Brackets but then most of my friends aren't web developers. As I occasionally do work there, I might look into it. Lots of people love Sublime but it's not open source and only partial freeware (with very lose limits).

I'm sad to say that this didn't continue. The garethflowers version of Atom does not appear to be seeing updates. We are at 1.13.1 (released 2017-01-29) and the official version is at v1.22.1 (released 2017-11-15).

As this means the program is incompatible many available add-ons, I'm going to add a note to the entry.

I went digging for portable instructions but the install instructions on the Atom site are less than clear: https://flight-manual.atom.io/getting-s ... ling-atom/ ... and I couldn't seem to create a folder with the .atom name.

I may have figured something out:

Steps:

• 1. Download the atom-windows.zip or atom-x64-windows.zip file and extract to temporary folder Atom-exe
  2. Launch and close atom.exe
  3. Copy folder C:\Users\USERNAME\.atom and the folder from step 1 to a folder of your choice
  
  You should have two folders at this point:
  
  • Atom-exe - main folder
    .atom - where settings are written
  4. Launch atom.exe

Status: Unclear. The program appears to write settings to AppData and I can't determine if they're just behaving like a temp folder or what.
