Instructions:
Unzip with Universal Extractor and rename files ending with ",1" from filenames (in "{app}" directory).
Delete the others.
You can also pass file or directory path to exe in commandline to work.

This helped me regaining ownership of my TEMP folder on Windows 7 that bugged me a lot.
Probably Acrobat modified directory ownership but I'm not sure.

Is there any way to turn off the context menu item?

TakeOwnershipPro_x64.dll and TakeOwnershipPro.dll are the 2 shell-extension files. Unregister them (regsvr32.exe /u) and delete them if you have no use for that functionality. The question is how did you get them registered onto your system? Was this done by the app alone? 'Cause that would mean it is not portable. However, I could not replicate your issue, but that might be because I already have my own "take ownership" registry hack for the right click menu.

Well, I was looking for something to post into the optional section of the extract instructions. Could I just put "Optionally, to not use the context menu (more portable) delete TakeOwnershipPro_x64.dll and TakeOwnershipPro_x64.dll"?

Hi webfork! After installing the program, just extract the single file of TakeOwnershipPro.exe from the installation directory and it can be moved to a USB drive. Then I bring the USB drive to another PC and the program also works. This way allows you to use the program without installing or adding a shortcut to the context menu.

So the proposed procedure here would be:

1. Install program
2. Copy TakeOwnershipPro.exe to a folder of your choice
3. Uninstall
4. Run TakeOwnershipPro.exe

You're right! The TakeOwnershipPro.exe file inside the setup package can run standalone. Check out the new release v1.5 which supports taking ownership a batch of folders/files.

There is no need for the install/uninstall process; UE can extract the executable just fine.

Just went through the process and roshanatan is right that you only need one file, but Joby is right that you don't have to install -- Universal Extract does a great job pulling that out. Also, when I went through the process there were two duplicate executable files so here's a extract instructions edit:

1. Download the installer and extract to a temporary folder
2. Move the file TakeOwnershipPro,1.exe in the {app} folder to a folder of your choice and delete other files
3. Rename TakeOwnershipPro,1.exe to TakeOwnershipPro.exe and launch

That work? I don't know if the rename step is necessary but it just seems clearer.

Yeah, UE extracts double-files.
Renaming should be mentioned so that less experienced users wouldn't feel confused.
