I'd like to say it's my birthday today since I definitely got a present: one of my favorite programs just put out the latest beta with a lot of work behind it: http://photodemon.org/

This is rapidly becoming a complement or accessory to other powerful, free tools like GIMP, Photivo and RawTherapee.

I didn't see that when I downloaded it so I'm not sure what to say. I'd go ahead and download it and then check with VirusTotal to see if it's a false positive.

Hashes:
  • CRC32: daf51c6e
    MD5: c95b3cf2b078ed63fd875163193b768c
    SHA1: e2beec918312161f2af8412ddbb66ac4e08fdebf
    SHA256: deaacde658e5e6f6f4949ad6049a149c6785722981dea71868420ba1d378eb5c
VT is giving it a 14/61, which I'll admit is high:
https://www.virustotal.com/#/file/deaac ... /detection

... but you can download it from Softpedia as well:

It's only showing an 11/61 now so I'd guess false positives.

Keystoning: How to fix with Photodemon

I found that the simplest tool to fix the "Keystone Effect" is Photodemon ( https://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=2656 ).
In Photodemon, go to Effects >> Transform >> Perspective
The interface is very intuitive.

Any chance you've got a screenshot? I didn't recognize the effect name so I looked it up on Wikipedia:
The keystone effect is the apparent distortion of an image caused by projecting it onto an angled surface. It is the distortion of the image dimensions, such as making a square look like a trapezoid, the shape of an architectural keystone, hence the name of the feature.

Great, thank you. The examples at the link are really the opposite of what I saw on the Wikipedia page, where it appeared to be about distorting a standard image rather than normalizing two rather unique images (a book cover and a cityscape).

How did I not know about this app?

A worthy Photoshop alternative that is open-source. Need to test it more, but big thumbs up on first impressions!

Agreed - it's becoming a constant companion on both my home and work machines.

PhotoDemon 8.0 now has full support for Windows icons, in response to my feature request to the author on his Github site. He's very receptive to feedback, and his attention to detail has resulted in a really great alternative to PhotoShop. In fact, because it is freeware I often think of it as a poor man's PhotoShop. I like it especially because it loads quickly even on my underpowered Win7 netbook, supports multiple images in tabs, and is more compliant with the Windows OS than a lot of other apps I've used.

My pleasure. I see from the nightly builds that the author's already working on version 8.2, just when I thought PhotoDemon could do just about anything. A fullscreen viewing option would be nice, but I won't request it, because he's got enough on his plate already. I open my images in the FastStone image viewer by default and launch PD from there when advance editing is needed. FastStone has lots of nice editing features, but its highlight and shadow function is not very accurate.
