4dots PDF Metadata Editor - batch set title, author, subject

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

4dots PDF Metadata Editor - batch set title, author, subject

#1 Post by webfork »

This is a program for a very narrow use, so I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't get added to the database, but it is portable and free so maybe someone will find and use it.

Image

Background

Had a very specific need for a batch metadata editor so I went digging. I found a lot of metadata tools for images, but not much on the PDF side. Adobe's converter just pulls whatever title is in Microsoft Word's metadata so many of the docs showed up as the very wrong title in some viewers. I figured this out late into a process after building over 100 PDF files with incorrect or confusing titles.

Key features
  • The program has just what I needed for settings to save the modified PDF including to original directory, overwrite, overwrite + backup, etc. Supports drag and drop and also functions as a PDF metadata viewer. Claims support for password-protected files but I didn't test this.
  • Also works on Adobe's Portfolio (embedded) format.
  • Supports 38 languages, although I'm not clear whether or not they have to be downloaded. I say this because there's a file "4dotsLanguageDownloader.exe" that comes with it.

Bugs
  • Interface goes wonky when I go full screen on a 1600 x 900 monitor.

Wishlist
  • More Metadata editor features (not just PDF)
  • Truly portable version (saving settings locally)

License: Claims to be Affero GPL but I couldn't find the source code on the website.

Steps: Open in 7-zip and copy files from the main folder and $PLUGINSDIR to the same folder. Launch "PDFMetadataEditor.exe"

Portable: Yes; saves no program settings. You have to set the language every time you start.

Stealth: No; saves a bunch of window settings junk to User\AppData\Local

Old thread update:

Just found out that PDF Shaper has functionality to do much of what this program does.

The program is up to version 3.1 but Softpedia is now listing it as adware. No changelog.

Old thread update: site offline, can still get it from Afterdawn:
https://www.afterdawn.com/software/desk ... -4dots.cfm

The download was marked as untrusted but came across fine in VT analysis:

Finally the source code (unverified) appears to be available on Github: https://github.com/fourDotsSoftware/Fre ... dataEditor

Duly noted and confirmed, the link points instead to also deceased BeCyPDFMetaEdit v2.37.0 (a non-portable of which we have related info at viewtopic.php?t=2513)...
