So tried the app just now and it's pretty good. However the line number gutter is an eye-sore - is there any way to disable it?

I already have Sublime Text for any code editing so I'd rather hide the line count area as seen in the OP. I'm not a member of Facebook so I can't suggest it to the author there, but if anyone else is a member it would be greatly appreciated to ask for a setting to hide the line number area.

Jovial Notepad is at version 1.7b (24/12/2014)
This release just updated the "Jovial Dictionary" extension from 1.0.0 to 1.0.1 release version.
This resolves the slow web service access time.
This release also added Spanish language file in the "lang" folder.
Jovial Notepad remains the same as version 1.7.
The latest extensions can also be downloaded separately at: https://sourceforge.net/projects/jovial ... xtensions/

Some notes from brief testing:

Good
  • Someone noted in comments that it's better than Jarte, which is partially true
  • Unlimited undo
  • Supports 7 world languages
Bad
  • It's no longer 70k as advertised earlier in this thread and on the website but still fairly small (500k)
  • RAM usage was a little out of hand (Jovial: 24 megs vs. Notepad++: 10 megs)
  • Very limited formatting controls: can change font color but that's it
  • Supports nested bullets but only via hotkeys and limited to 3 levels
License: freeware according to Softpedia so I'm not sure what it's doing on SourceForge.

The RTF format saves images very inefficiently (25k JPG becomes a 900k bitmap) but of course has broad format support.

- JovialNotepad.exe is 84 KB

- You can do more than just changing the font color...

- For nested bullets you can also highlight the text, right click and select the level

Agree about the memory usage.

Oh thanks for that -- I couldn't imagine a rich text editor without those kinds of controls.

Version 1.8 is out. And we have togglable line numbers, yaas!
Version 1.8 (06/07/2016)
------------------------
This release adds 2 new menu items under the "Settings" menu:
1) Line Number
2) Backup File
This release also updates JovialDictionary to 1.0.2 which fixes one minor UI bug.
Now the UI text boxes and buttons are resized nicely when the window is resized or maximised.
To update to this version:
- Just download and replace the latest JovialNotepad.exe, lang_default.txt and Settings.ini
- Optionally update your lang\*.txt file with the 2 new menu items
- Optionally replace the JovialDictionary-xx.exe with the latest JovialDictionary-1.0.2.exe
Read the [Changelog] below for more details.

One bug I've noticed is when opening large RTF documents the line number pane will automatically display, and in a glitched way (as you scroll the line numbers disappear and don't display).

Most notable change is the adoption of windows newline format "CarriageReturn+LineFeed (hex OD OA)",
instead of the unix line termination convention "LineFeed (hex OA)" used in former versions.

Changelog v1.9
  • Fixes the find/replace dialog losing focus once a search is done.
  • Adds a colour picker to the right-click context menu for text foreground colour and highlight colour.
  • Adds a list of pre-defined date formats to choose from for inserting date (F5).
  • Saves text content with Win "carriage return + line feed" line termination format (instead of previous Linux format),
so that opening the saved file with the normal Windows Notepad will see the new lines properly
