Portable SmartFTP - FTP client

#1 Post by Replika »

Website: http://www.smartftp.com/
Feature: http://www.smartftp.com/features.php

Download & Instruction: http://www.smartftp.com/support/kb/port ... f2568.html

IMO, It's the best FTP client

-[edit]-
if you extract the installer (SFTPNSI.exe) by UniExtract, maybe you need rename file $R0 to sfFTPLib.dll

Portable SmartFTP

#2 Post by Gary »

Replika

This is a great find - IMO, and RegShot appears to confirm its portability. Preferred SmartFTP to all others I've tried.

Steps I used:

* Download SFTPNSI.exe, and use UniExtract on it
* Use UniExtract on the SmartFTP.exe installer within the extracted SFTPMSI folder
* Delete the SmartFTP Windows Installer Package in the newly extracted SmartFTP folder
* Add the PortableSmartFTP.exe to the new SmartFTP folder
* Launch SmartFTP via PortableSmartFTP.exe

The *.exe and *.dll files, except PortableSmartFTP.exe, compress with no problems, from ~10M to ~3.5M.

License...

The application's Help states the following: "SmartFTP is free for personal, educational and non-commercial use. Commercial use: SmartFTP may be used for 30 days. Please register after the trial period."

I've used SmartFTP non-portable for a long time, under the "free for personal, educational and non-commercial use" terms. Don't recall any nags, but its exquisite functionality is worth any...

I can't get it to work. The program runs fine, but RegShot found tons of settings in the registry.

Then when I tried to run the program on another machine, the settings are not persisted.

For example, it doesn't remember that I have removed certain toolbars, or that I have disabled warning on exit etc etc etc.

Andrew

It ran using PortableSmartFTP.exe, and RegShot recorded no entries. Additionally, PortableSmartFTP created a rather large (172k) Registration Entires file in its root folder. Settings were preserved between two different machines. However, on a third I couldn't get it to launch - not even the non-portable version.

Nevertheless, where I can, I'll use PortableSmartFTP since it's such a robust ftp client...

First, A big thanks to Gary.

The Home Site implied that you just downloaded the 'portable' file. As Gary makes clear you actually have to download both the 'standard' version (SFTPNSI.exe) and the 'portable' version.

Just a small trivial correction - when using UniExtract on the standard version you extract from SmartFTP.msi.(Not the exe file)

I too can confirm that it runs OK and it's free just as Gary makes clear.

I have to admit I'm a little unclear as to Registry writes. The program definitely creates a .reg file. So if it's not actually writing to the Registry what's that all about?

Naturally thanks must go to Replika. He's found a nice portable program. I never realised it was a freebie. I actually used the standard version 2 years ago or so and found that it didn't quite do it for me. The one I use now is FlashFXP but this is not freeware.

This site: http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware ... l#SmartFTP and others mention that this is $hareware. Quote from "Last freeware version"
SmartFTP 1.0.970 (last freeware version without nag popups)
SmartFTP allows you to transfer files across the Internet. It features an Explorer-like interface that is fully customizable and supports drag-and-drop functions. Multiple FTP connections can be opened at the same time, and you can copy files from one remote host to another. Remote host directory information is cached for future viewing, FTP URLs are supported, and you can even view HTML pages within the client. SmartFTP also includes an interface for FTP-specific search engines such as FTPSearch and Filez.com. Other features include a Favorites list similar to that of Internet Explorer; the ability to resume broken downloads; a global history; background transfers; proxy support; a passive transfer mode; and the ability to perform recursive downloads, uploads, and deletes.

The download from the homepage is a 30 days trial version

Further to Ennovy's post, the version downloaded using Replika's links is clearly Freeware (free for personal use).

There is a Nag screen which states the above but acts as a reminder to purchase for commercial users.

If this is unacceptable to PFC then OK. My guess is that most users will happily accept it.

Some portable version of programs import registry then start the program; save and delete registry when the program quits. That we don't have to change the source

SmartFTP 1.0.970 Portable (last freeware version)

#11 Post by bob92132 »

Download: SmartFTP1.0.970Portable.zip (1.5MB)
Download Mirror 2: http://exoshare.com/download.php?uid=Z3RUYWXL

This is SmartFTP 1.0 Build 970 - The last freeware version of this application before it went commercial.
It has been made Portable with PortableApps.comLauncher 2.2.
The application gives an update notification that it is very old at startup that you must click OK to. Other than that it works perfectly.

I ran avast virusscan on bob92132's upload above but other than that, I have no idea of it's status. As his account is new, proceed with caution.

Hi guys, being smart Webnetizens, it is wise to verify my download.
Anyways, here are the steps I took, so you can create it for yourself from scratch:

1. I downloaded SmartFTP 1.0.970 setup from post #12 at http://forum.oldversion.com/showthread. ... #post11792
2. Installed SmartFTP without the Explorer hook into a VM and then coped its install files to App\SmartFTP1.0.970 - you can verify that these files are the original.
3. Used Regshot 2.0.170 to find any files or reg keys it writes to. Exported HKCU\Software\SmartFTP from VM to App\DefaultData\settings\HKCU-SmartFTP.reg for use by PortableApps.comLauncher
4. I created App\AppInfo\Launcher\SmartFTP1.0.970Portable.ini to define the registry entries in HKCU\Software\SmartFTP as per PortableApps.comLauncher.
5. Extracted icons from SmartFTP.exe to create App\AppInfo\appicon.ico and put basic info in App\AppInfo\appinfo.ini
6. Ran PortableApps.comLauncherGenerator.exe on the directory structure to create SmartFTP1.0.970Portable.exe

You can recreate the SmartFTP1.0.970Portable.exe for yourself if you would like.

SmartFTP has been removed from A+ Freeware and from Last Freeware Version please compare the following links- the original ones and those at Archive.Org:

http://www.aplusfreeware.com/categories ... rtFTP.html - https://web.archive.org/web/20110810130 ... rtFTP.html

http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page17.html - https://web.archive.org/web/20110707063 ... age17.html

I suppose SmartFTP has been removed because of pressure from the developers- SmartSoft Ltd., the company behind SmartFTP is one of greediest, deceptive, roguish and user-unfriendly one can imagine. The license they offer is in fact a subscription- after a year SmartFTP stops working and the already purchased license requires renewal. More- the license can be used only once- if it happens that the user re-installs OS the already purchased license cannot be used again.

SmartFTP version 1.0.970 is a very archaic and primitive piece of software. I don't know whether it can be made portable but I do not recommend it- it is released 13 years ago, update check cannot be disabled and it is nagware to boot.

I usually never give advices but I am tempted to say- don't do any business with SmartSoft Ltd.- their product is over-priced, ugly (ribbon interface) and the company is misleading and deceptive.
