I tested it and it is really slim, consuming around 70MB with a couple of pages -- comparing with over 500MB for Pale Moon. But it strugles under load, too. Anyway, good catch, I am Bass. ;)

Slimboat - A Qt / Webkit web browser

#3 Post by freakazoid »

SlimBoat is a free lightweight web browser based on the QT port of Webkit rendering engine.

It is built on top of the cross-platform QT library and available for various operating systems such as Windows, Mac and Linux. It is designed to offer more features and flexibility than most mainstream browsers which are focused on the core job of web page rendering.

Code: Select all

Download page has a portable version:

Needs testing for stealthness.

I can live with the empty registry key. Reminds me of Opera's empty key! ;)

Okay, so I finally had a chance to test this and it's a pretty barebones Webkit browser.

Below is my quick rundown.

Pros:
* Uses very little memory - 6MB on first run
* Built-in translation support - probably uses some form of userscript, but it's the first browser outside of Chromium to support something like this
* Groups - think of this like sessions in other browsers. I like that they view groups as bundled bookmarks, which is nice.
* Quick search supports adding input fields with POST variables. Opera supports this. Firefox with an extension.

Cons:
* All their search engines use affiliate links (not unlike other browsers, but I found this one more intrusive)
* Their built-in Adblock has a set list of subscriptions and you cannot add custom ones
* Quick search doesn't support shortcuts (eg. "g my search term" would search Google for "my search term")

All-in-all, not a bad little browser, but I won't be using it. I much prefer QupZilla instead.

Just got an email from slimboat.
The developers mention Slimjet and might be abandoning slimboat in the future.

Haven't tried Slimjet.
Slimboat Newsletter wrote:Dear SlimBoat users,

You are receiving this email because you are subscribed to the newsletter of SlimBoat web browser. We would like to introduce to you the latest addition to our browser product family -- Slimjet web browser.

Slimjet is built on top of the open-source Chromium project and powered by the Blink engine, on which Google Chrome is also based. If you didn't know already, SlimBoat is based on Qt-Webkit, which is Qt's port of Webkit. Although Blink is derived from Webkit as well, Google is constantly making new improvements and add supports of newest web technologies to Blink so that Blink is significantly ahead of the original webkit in terms of performance and supported technologies. Therefore we have developed this Slimjet Web Browser to take advantage of the power of the Blink engine.

Compared with SlimBoat, Slimjet is faster, more secure and enjoys much better website compatibility. It might uses a little more memory than SlimBoat at the beginning when you just open the browser. But it will actually use less memory if you open a lot of tabs and use the browser for a long time in a single session. We'd recommend most SlimBoat users to give Slimjet a test drive and see if it works better for you. If you would like to give it a try, you can download it from http://www.slimjet.com .

Took a quick look at Slimjet's video. To me, these are the most unique features from stock Chromium:

* Customizable toolbar - http://youtu.be/jwIPqtyl_mM?t=2m4s (Chromium doesn't allow you to edit their toolbar, Slimjet allows you to)
* Saving submitted form data as a bookmark - http://youtu.be/jwIPqtyl_mM?t=3m13s
* Built-in photo editor - http://youtu.be/jwIPqtyl_mM?t=6m

Just found this notice
http://www.Slimjet.com wrote:Important Notice about the Portable Version

In the portable version, all the settings and data are stored under the folder where the portable version archive is extracted. If you are running it off a USB disk, make sure it has at least 2G free space. Also, make sure it has reasonable read/write speed. Otherwise you might feel it runs significantly slower than a hard drive installation. If you extract it on the hard disk, DO NOT extract into the program files folder under the system folder (such as c:\program files or c:\program files (x86). Extract it under your personal folder or any folder not on the system drive.

The data and settings between the regular installer version and the portable version are completely independent of each other. If you switch between the two versions, you will have to copy the data between them manually. In the portable version, all the data and settings are stored under the "User Data" within the extraction folder. In the regular version, all the data and settings are stored under the local application data folder. The path is usually like "c:\users\YourUserName\AppData\local\Slimjet\User Data" under Windows Vista or later. It is like "c:\documents and settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Slimjet\User Data" under Windows XP.

Topic update: Apparently Slimboat (Qt Webkit-based, v1.1.54 still available from Softpedia) is no more -- although Flashpeak is still updating both Slimjet (Blink engine) and Slimbrowser (previously Trident-based, currently based on the Gecko engine)...
