I have removed Unknown Device Identifier from the database because it deposits an Internet shortcut to http://www.zhangduo.com/ on the desktop every time it is run. Thanks to Mark for the information.

Couldn't get that prg to run at all.

Pity, I just need something like that. Anybody knows of a free alternative, even if not portable?

Cheers

I have created a portable exe file that will run the program and delete the desktop shortcut.

1. Place the following portable executable in the same directory as UnknownDeviceIdentifier.exe

2. If filename is different than in step 1, for example, udi.exe, create a file titled Portable.ini in the same directory with the following text in the INI file.

Code: Select all

[System]
filename=udi.exe
3. Run UnknownDeviceIdentifierPortable.exe

Unknown Devices 1.2 may be a suitable alternative.

Even with the portable starter, I still get the following error msg upon startup:
Cannot create file C:\WINDOWS\ap.cab
This on a computer without admin rights. On another with admin rights, I only get a msg "abnormal program termintaion" and that's it ...

Seems there is more than one file written to the host computer by this proggy ...

Cheers

cmmehl: Did you get a chance to try Unknown Devices 1.2?

I did indeed and am delighted! :-)

The updating of the database is a bit uncomfortable, but it's worth the effort, runs smoothly even without admin rights.

Seems to be truly portable application, too, did not observe any writings to the host computers, although I didn't investigate it thoroughly.

Thx for the advice!
Chris
