Lifehacker Tracking - Teracopy, PDF X-Change

Lifehacker has some really neat software, and it would be neat if someone could run portability checks on their stuff and add/reject. But I can't do it.

Anyway, here's a couple I found there:

PDF X-Vieweris like Foxit, but can do some stuff only Foxit Pro does.

Teracopy is a copying manager that allows for buffers, pause, etc.

So, are these good?

Actually, I routinely read lifehacker, as well as a couple of other software sites. I think a lot of the people here do. If I find something useful or that I think may be of interest to the folks here, I will usually test it out and post it. That said, I do not test all of the software I see for portability. I think that would be a full-time job.

I'd love to run by the featured downloads.

I think Teracopy should get extra consideration, since a copying program is very relevant to portable systems (although I mainly use portable applications on my laptop, just to keep my computer clean and make sharing easier.

Does it run portable? (UniExtract worked, but with a blank error message.)

Just a quick run through with PDF XChange Viewer.

Used UniExtractor, copied files from the App directory and copied over the Help folder.

Renamed PDFXCview,1.exe to PDFXCview.exe and launched. Following reg keys were created:

PDF Xchange Viewer is a really useful program, and I'll probably install it as a regular application on my desktop -- but it writes a lot of stuff to the registry and probably cannot be considered portable by Andrew's usual standards.

To test, I extracted the executable plus resource.dat and ISTask.dll. I then ran the program without installing it.

PDF Xchange Viewer does not load many keys when it is just started. But if you then load a pdf file to read or modify, it creates a lot of other keys and values.

As for TeraCopy, it appears to write a log and its options file to %appdata%\TeraCopy so it does not appear to be portable. For something similar that is portable, you could take a look here: http://www.portablefreeware.com/?c=11&sc=34

Sorry, Chris, I just jotted that off too quickly.

On the other hand, how would embedding this in code tags have shortened it? I understand the code tags would have made it much more readable, but wouldn't you still have to do just as much scrolling?

What I probably should have done in my original post is to just indicate that the program writes almost 70 registry keys and values and not have burdened the forum with the detail. Nonetheless, I'll try to remember to use code tags in the future.

Hope your thumb is feeling better real soon, Chris! :lol:

Yucca, u're right. Unfortunately. Sorry.

Knew it from other forums, that a code windows develops scrollbars after a certain height - doesn't seem to be the case here.

Maybe an area for improvement, Andrew?

FWIW --- I used the JauntePE wizard
to make PDFxc viewer portable
(With a great big helping hand from FireWrath to add the File Exceptions to the ini file --- see this thread if you're interested)

PDFxc works great using the JPE wrapper, and I LOVE the commenting feature. (I think it isn't 100% stealthy, but RegSeeker only found a few registry entries for Most Recently Used.)

The JauntePE wizard is so easy even a granny can use it! :)

Yes, but if create an empty file named "Portable" in the TeraCopy folder... ;-) It also supports Unicode.
