Obviously there are many ways to do this, but if you need to quickly put together an anonymous browser, one way something distributed by the Tor project. I found this via a PortableApps.com post, although it's not endorsed by them:

It does appear to be genuinely portable and near-stealth (at least it doesn't save any settings or cache information).

This has been mentioned before in a not-very-postive light but it's distributed by the EFF [edit: as mentioned later in the thread, this is not distributed by the EFF] so I have some faith that they at least have SOME kind of arrangement with Mozilla to distribute. They've got a lot of lawyers working for them and I find it difficult to believe they'd do something with poor legal standing.

That's not to say they're infallible, but point taken.

v2.3.25-2 is now available. Couldn't find a changelog so here's the one on Softpedia, but the program is based upon Mozilla's ESR release, which is probably more secure, but likely won't work with some of the cutting-edge plugins.

After a bunch of other tools sort of failed me today, Tor Browser came to my aid and so I felt compelled to add it finally:

And it looks like Tor took some of Mozilla's complaints to heart as it is no longer a Firefox-branded browser within the package. It's now called TorBrowser.

I can go into substantial detail on this topic but two things I'd like to note:

1. I really liked the suggestion that computer research has ethical implications. There are SO many developers who tend to think in a very narrow scope of solving hard problems without much understanding of the concerns surrounding those problems.
2. To be clear, the ethical concern is not that the Silk Road was taken down by the FBI, it's that there was no oversight for other traffic not considered criminal. The suggestion is that, while today it was someone bad, tomorrow it might be someone good (e.g. the next Martin Luther King).

Even if you don't use TorBrowser, it's helping improve Firefox.
