Chasys Programs

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Chasys Programs

#1 Post by JohnW »

I was browsing for free image editors which support layers when I stumbled upon John Paul Chacha's site.
The heading "Kenyan software at its very best" brought a smile to my face although I know that was very patronising of me.
Anyway, the program I looked at was Chasys Draw IES. It doesn't appear on the radar very often. I played with it for a while and was quite impressed. It had an appearance of quality about it.
Unfortunately I suspect that it is not portable - can an expert confirm that?

Also on the site there was a program Chasys Math (v 1.31)
This is a suite of math utilities including a calculator featuring graph-plotting, complex numbers and visually-perfect algebraic method (Chasys Math Calculator), and a matrix equation solver that can handle systems of equations as large as 32 by 32 (Chasys Math Matrix). It is probably portable. The files are obtained by installation/copy/uninstallation.

Find it at ...

From a quick test (running the main executable artist.exe) i've done, Chasys Draw is not portable. Writes its settings to Common AppData. If you untick file associations, the only thing i saw in the registry is the association with its own format. Also i deleted the shell extension dll, as i always do before running the program

The second one is stealth, it doesn't write any settings

Chasys Draw is not portable, I posted a message on the developer's wish list board a long time ago requesting a portable version (and a few others did the same since then) but he never responded. Anyways, just re-tested V3.72.1 to confirm mrpink's findings:

user\public\Documents\Chasys Draw IES
settings.bin in user\all\Chasys Draw IES\Artist
settings.bin user\all\Chasys Draw IES\Version
user\all\Chasys Draw IES\Artist\autosave

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\.cd5

Tested: Not Portable

Just to thank mrpink and Baas for their findings.
Much as I suspected. What a pity the developer doesn't respond.

Don't make things more complicated than they have to be.

Thought you'd go with this one (one of the best scenes from Reservoir Dogs and great foreshadowing).

The current version of Chasys Draw IES is 4.47.01.

From the History page at
http://www.jpchacha.com/chasysdraw/help ... #changelog
Chasys Draw IES 4.00.01 (23 Sep 2012):
• Install to USB (as portable app)

From the Portable Chasys Draw IES page at
http://www.jpchacha.com/chasysdraw/help ... rtable.htm
“Chasys Draw IES can be converted into a portable application using the Install To USB option on the file menu.”

Not ideal, but I am thinking:
1. Install regular version
2. Create portable version (Install To USB)
3. Optionally uninstall regular version from 1.

Holy crap, look at that changelog. This has been in some kind of development for 16 years now. Good lord. Linux is 26.
