WinEdt (multi-purpose text editor)

#1 Post by Midas »

Although payware, WinEdt has a long development history dating back to 1993, is still being actively developed, and so has both 32 and 64 bit versions; it also has an active community (at http://www.winedt.org/), reason enough to give it an entry here at the forum. The package available for download gives you a 31 day trial, and registration starts at 40 bucks for students.

WinEdt is used as a front-end for compilers and typesetting systems, such as TeX, HTML or NSIS. WinEdt's highlighting schemes can be customized for different modes and its spell checking functionality supports multilingual setups, with dictionaries (word lists) for many languages available for downloading from WinEdt's Community Site...
WinEdt appears to be massively customizable -- here's a shot of it as HTML editor (more screens at http://www.winedt.com/snap.html):

WinEdt is also natively portable, according to its installation instructions:

However, if you are creating a portable installation you should disable User Profile Creation: this way WinEdt will create a Local folder inside its install folder and this folder will contain all your custom settings.

EDIT: WinEdt current version (v10.1, built 20160525) can be downloaded from http://www.winedt.com/download.html.
