Just found Gaia Sky (https://zah.uni-heidelberg.de/gaia/outreach/gaiasky/), a free (MPL 2.0) multi-platform JRE 7+ dependent stars viewer. There's no mention of portability, but it might be possible with jportable and some software tweaking fu...

Found another one called Space Engine. Looks very nice but it really does need a beefy system to run smoothly

Although it claims to be portable, it is portable but you must install it as normal

SpaceEngine is a portable application. You may simply copy the entire SpaceEngine folder to another location and run SpaceEngine.exe, located in the system subfolder. You should not copy the “cache” subfolder though – it will be created automatically.
