ORPALIS PDF reducer (adware)

#1 Post by webfork »

Synopsis: batch PDF compression tool

Background: I tested this out because I was checking out a site I thought was spiritually similar to PFW called “oldergeeks.com” but at least in terms of my first test of one of their listings, it looks like they have out-of-date adware.

I tested out the older version (v.1.1.9) hosted here because I could download without registration ... v 3.0.13 is listed over at softpedia but it’s really just pointing to the same version:

Homepage: http://pdfreducer.orpalis.com/

Steps: Download, unzip, launch installer. Copy files over from C:\Program Files\ORPALIS\PDF Reducer Free Edition

License: Adware and nagware; for personal and non-commercial use.

Requires: dotNET (not sure which one)

Does it work? As far as doing it's job of compressing PDFs, it does pretty well. I got compression between 10 and 60%. With default settings this is not lossless, meaning there was clear evidence of compression between old and new. Older PDFs did better, as did those with integrated OCR.
