Transcribe - manual transcription for PDF (JacobBoerema(

#1 Post by webfork »

A solid transcription program that's useful on handwritten notes, when you can't run an OCR, or when you can only run it partially (like a damaged print-out). The program can scan files in, has a variety of great edit tools (rotate, invert colors, convert to grayscale, etc.) and automatically moves the image down a bit when you press enter.

Additionally the program has a good basic RTF text editor.

Websites Input: a variety of formats, not including PDF (would have to convert to TIFF using a program like PDF XChange).

Output: Saves to RTF

Steps: Uniextract 2, launch Transcript.exe

License: Free for personal use

Status: not portable, writes to C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Transcript (Tested version 2.5 on Win7x64)

Note that the program is technically portable if you move the ini file to the local folder. On the next launch, it will read the local folder, copy it to AppData, and then use that file going forward. Unfortunately this is probably more than most users will want to do, but this would be very easy to portablize using a wrapper program.

Languages: 10 including French, Spanish, and Italian.

Wishlist:

* Ability to have horizontal AND vertical views (e.g. for newspaper or vertical text)

Concerning Transcribe PDF capabilities, I found this:
  • http://www.jacobboerema.nl/en/Freeware.htm#Requirements author wrote:Pdf: To be able to use images stored in pdf files you will have to install the 32 bits version of Ghostscript separately which can be downloaded either at SourceForge or at Ghostscript.com (choose the GPL Ghostscript Windows 32 bits exe).

    ...

If the 32 bits version of Ghostscript is already installed then Transcript[?] will automatically detect it when starting and pdf files will show up in the list of images.
    And here's the homepage screenshot:

Toggling between the default top-bottom horizontal panes to side-by-side vertical panes is available, but only in the Pro version (€15 per user). See below.

  • Show image and editor Windows beside each other instead of below each other, switch between both settings with Ctrl+Shift+F12. Menu: View, Windows side by side.
