Ares - file sharing

#1 Post by tactictoe »

[Moderator note: this thread was split from the qBitTorrent thread.]

---

I use Ares Galaxy since day one, it is also open source and written in Delphi - pascal language. I love so much Delphi. It's not perfect but it works fine for me.

Ares Galaxy current version:2.4.0 (18 Feb 2016)
Ares is a free open source bittorent and chat program that enables users to share any digital file including images, audio, video, software, documents, etc. You may now easily publish your files through the Ares peer to peer network. As a member of the virtual community, you can search and download just about any file shared by other users. Latest versions also support internet radio stations. With Ares you can join chat rooms or host your channel and meet new friends.

Need a download link to try? Here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/aresga ... urce=accel

I stay away from these torrent client: Vuze, uTorrent, BitLord, FrostWire, Limewire (dead now) for various reasons I am not at liberty to explain here.

Is Ares can be portable: YES, stealth? The usual not so yes. What you might not know is any VCL compiled in Delphi are naturally portable and need NO runtime library or other DLL but what is in the OS targeted.

P.S.: I did a search inside the catalog here and did not find this torrent in any entry, can be a new submission but if already tested and non-approved. Otherwise it's posted and I really need new spectacles.

Have all a nice day.

I was going to say that, while Ares is under the umbrella of file sharing, it isn’t a torrent client so it’s in kind of a different category. However, while I didn't see anything on their site about it, Wikipedia indicates it supports bittorrent: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ares_Galaxy

Note that it’s probably not portable, but here’s the PortableApps topic from 6 yrs ago:

Is Ares can be portable: YES
How? Ares stores data in C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Ares\Data, I haven't checked the registry.

I have been using Ares since version 2.1.6.3040 (from 2010) but as a file-sharing program, not as a torrent client. Shareaza also has a torrent module.

Is Ares can be portable: YES, ...
I also mention it's sure not stealth.
I said it can be. Did not said it was. Did not test its portability neither. The sources are open, so it could be modified for portability.
True Ares is a file sharing software first but it is also a BitTorrent client (not the best thought):

Thanks to both for you valued input. Previous debate on (de)merits of Torrent clients: viewtopic.php?t=21508
Where is ares on this nice list? Otherwise, did not have a shovel long enough to dig deep enough to topic 21508 from year 2014,

Status: Not Portable. Writes to:
  • \AppData\Local\Ares
    HKLM\software\Classes\.arescol
    HKLM\software\Classes\.torrent
    HKLM\software\Classes\arlnk
    HKLM\software\Classes\magnet
    HKU\current\software\Ares
    HKU\current_classes\.arescol
I tested v.240. Notes: Uniextract didn't work so I installed to default folder in Program Files (Installer requires admin rights). I did a copy to another folder and then uninstall.

Edit: gave this it's own thread to avoid clouding the qBitTorrent topic
