Pinta - open graphics editor

#1 Post by webfork »

Summary: Pinta is cast as a cross-platform, open source alternative to Paint.NET.

Requires: GTK# http://download.mono-project.com/gtk-sh ... .win32.msi (requires restart after install) and dotNET 4.0

License: MIT X11 (Source: http://github.com/PintaProject) Note that the zip file version on the homepage is the source code, which is confusing. I downloaded the Softpedia "portable" version.

Version Tested: 0.8 Beta 2

Verdict: Unknown. Win7x64 crashes ... crash info is saved to AppData, but that's not quite a settings analysis.

Update: Tested with the necessary stuff installed but just crashes; unable to test.

----

Background: Lately I've been working with images that need very minor edition and then can be turned around and pasted somewhere else. Things like screencaps that need to be smaller, usernames that need to be obscured. I've been using Paint.NET for this almost exclusively as it's fast, widely lauded, and has a few extra features. I was interested in finding an open source program that was somewhere between JPEGview (real fast, few features) and GIMP (real slow, loaded with features)

A portable version is discussed here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic ... CTRvBGBmUY ... anyway, I tried this version on a machine that had both and it crashes at launch.

Update: Version 1.6 test results:

Status: Not portable

Setup: Win7x86

Steps: Install to a non-Program Files folder and launch

Writes to:
  • AppData\Roaming\mono.addins
    AppData\Roaming\Pinta

Still requires installation of GTK# for .NET 2.12.22.

Not a bad program though. Development appears to have stalled but I have hopes that it will come back.
