File splitting/joining program of choice?

#1 Post by webfork »

There are a LOT of programs here on the site that split / join files. Some are integrated into file managers and aren't listed specifically in the category set up for it. I think a little note about which one is the best and why would help visitors pick.

I personally use 7-zip's archive splitter, just because it can be opened by programs other than 7-zip itself. What do you use?

I use Swiss File Knife. It's a CLI program, but I split/join files so rarely that I don't want a separate application for that.

Total Commander. It has one annoying quirk (requires you to select only the first file and if you select others too, instead of correcting, shows an error message), but I always have it by hand.

I like the one 'I am Baas' suggested here.

File Splitter Lite

But like 'SYSTEM', I also use Swiss File Knife, it's an amazing tool.

So an old thread update: I'm still using 7zip, but the problem is that it reads the entire file and then writes the file in parts. A splitter program should ideally take a file and just chop it up with as little effort as possible. The difference when splitting a 10 gig file is several minutes of time (more if you're doing it over a network) and a lot of hard drive activity.

Are there any programs that do this?

I also use 7zip for this - But I use compression Level 'Store' and I see the files appearing immediatly as the bar progresses accross the graph

i've tried Gsplit a couple of times, without much success though . the split procedure was quick [compared to winrar] but my inability to merge the files doesn't allow me to suggest this app. you could give it a try though. maybe you 'll have a different experience

FFSJ: The Fastest File Splitter and Joiner

http://www.jaist.ac.jp/~hoangle/filesj/
FFSJ-Lite is only one .EXE file, it does not need to be installed, you can directly run FFSJ by double-clicking FFSJ.exe.
Not tested for portability.

FFSJ-Lite saves settings to "...\AppData\Roaming\FFSJ\FFSJ.cfg".

HxD (Hex editor) has Split & Concatenate functions from its toolbar.
(it also has: Secure delete, File-compare, Check-sums & Statistics)
As I use HxD a lot for large file search and replace, I often install it to the context menus
Always to hand, for me, beats most other considerations.

Too bad File Splitter and Joiner isn't portable since it is a nice tool.
It's web-page is no linger available but the program can be downloaded via Archive.Org. It is also available at Softpedia.
