That's a nice read Richard; thanks for the link. It reminds me of my recent encounter with Acronis though... (cool that Acronis 8 can be acquired free right now).
MaxBlast 5, Maxtor's utility for getting a new drive up and running, is a branded version of Acronis and I had a rather unpleasant encounter with it. Using it from Windows, it pooped system files all over my Windows folder (and corresponding registry entries) that were not removed when I uninstalled. In addition, it added a drastic 30 second delay to my boot up time (after Windows loaded but before I could interact with my hard drives via Explorer). Since I was using it during a Windows installation I figured it could've been any number of issues so I restarted the Windows install from scratch and encountered the same problems. Though the version of MaxBlast 5 I had (came with a new 500 GB PATA drive) could've been faulty, I likely won't use Acronis again.
What ended up resolving my issue was MaxBlast 3... I tried 4 but it kept hanging when trying to detect SATA drives connected to the same system. Note that MaxBlast 3 and 4 were NOT based on Acronis.

Macrium Reflect Free gets 5 stars and a recommendation from Gizmo Freeware (mentioned above by 1002Richards); the download weighs around 50MB and provides disk imaging, disk cloning, scheduled backups, Linux rescue CD, Windows PE rescue media with RAID support, and support for GPT.
