TightVNC you can setup to access through a java applet, so you should be able to access through most browsers. Some firewalls won't allow access to anything but port 80 (http) and port 443 (ssl), so I suggest using those ports. There's also a "viewer" app that'll easily stick on a usb key.

Thanks for the response but I need a VPN tunnel, rather than remote control session.

Hamachi is great, but like most VPN clients, it requires a network adapter to be installed on the host machine. I remember reading something in their forums about it... ah http://forums.hamachi.cc/viewtopic.php?t=4195

The application and settings are portable, but Buri depends on you being logged in as an administrator.

Buri does require you be on an Privileged account, not necessarily Admin.

With that being said, if you do this do not distribute it as I do not want Buri being flagged by AV), it can be wrapped by rootkit techniques to install the driver.

Buri does not have to run on an Privileged account, if the Hamachi driver/adapter is already installed.

The driver installer already tries to fool MS Driver Signing.

So m@tty Buri itself does not need to run as admin. Only the driver part of Buri/Hamachi.

Thanks for the information ZeroVoid.

I was just going on what I read here:
Buri Wiki wrote:This must be run from an Admin account to work, otherwise the virtual network driver install will fail.
Can you please explain the term "Priviledged" account as opposed to Administrator? Is this Windows XP Pro/Vista specific? Using Windows XP Home, I was not previously aware of any step between regular user and admin user.

On Windows in its default configuration, any account that is in the Administrators group has all the same powers as if logged on as Administrator, for most things that matter. We say that the account is "an" administrator, as opposed to "the" Administrator.

The way an administrator gets the right to do things is via privileges. There are a whole bunch of those privileges and they can be assigned one-by-one to regular users, if you don't want to make the regular user a member of the Administrators group. Members of the Administrator group get all or most of them by default. In Windows "Home" versions Microsoft makes it hard to use this fine-grained approach to privileges, so there is only a distinction between Administrators and regular users. But even on Pro machines, it's rare for privileges to be assigned individually; most people just run as an administrator.

Note that running as an administrator generally means you can do anything you want to the machine, from installing network drivers to disabling AV software and joining the PC to a botnet. A small program that you accidentally click on from a web site or email can do this in a few seconds, before you notice it has run. So when you run as an administrator your machine is much easier to compromise.

NeoRouter

Note that I'm not recommending it, just reporting the first instance I've found of a VPN that even claims to be portable.

NeoRouter leaves traces behind (I tested before, but can't remember where exactly)

Also try [url0http://logmeinwiki.com/wiki/Hamachi:Buri#Download_Locations]Buri[/url], which is a Portable wrapper for Hamachi. The wrapper was designed when Hamachi V1.x.x was around, so I don't know if this would work with V2.x.x But look on FileHippo for an older version.

Or TeamViewer has a VPN feature, but for Personal use only.

That's kind of a big deal -- I'd like to add something to the PFW entry about it but I'm having trouble tracking down more info. Is it a VPN just for file transfers or can you do other applications over TeamViewer?

The VPN information can be found here - http://www.teamviewer.com/help/support.aspx and then select Manual.
Or try here - GoogleDocs Preview of the Manual.

It's a fully working VPN according to the Manual!

Excellent, thanks. I hope I get a chance to play with this in the near future because that offers enormous possibility. A portable, secure support/presentations/cooperation/remote access? That has to be the answer to at least 10 threads on the forums over time and not just "Looking for a portable VPN client".
