Myportablesoftware [crapware]

#1 Post by david.lynch »

Want to save a copy of your personal file on a usb pendrive but you are worried that, in case of theft, someone will be able to access your data?

With Free File Camouflage you can hide your files inside a jpeg image!

The software can be used with the main interface or via the explorer "send to" context menu (the first time you only need to select a directory with some images).

All the files are encrypted using AES and hidden inside an image.

What happens if someone tries to open a camouflaged image? Well... nothing! He will only see the image.

Donationware

#4 Post by JohnW »

A portable program (My Daily Wallpaper) was mention in a UK magazine recently.
It stems from a site ...
myportablesoftware.com
I did a search and strangely there is only one mention of the site in PFC (under Free File Camouflage).
In the thread Mr Reliable (aka Baas) rightly commented that the program was donationware with a nag and required .NET Framework.
I think the .NET issue is becoming a non-issue.
So that leaves the issue of donationware.
Just to be clear - from this site you can use the apps for free indefinitely.
A donation avoids a 'gentle' nag. That implies that the app is not stealth. But then, lots of PFC apps are not stealth.

What is the general view on donationware? Is it tolerable? or a No-No?

[opinion]Though .Net is increasingly on PCs, it is still optional. My dislike for it being in TPFC is that it then makes the programs included in the database depend on something/anything being on a PC.

As far as donationware/nagware I've a much harder stance. If I'm fixing or working on someone else's PC I don't want a program telling me "buy this or I'll ask you again." In fact I don't even want that on my PC (portable or otherwise) The ONLY app I have on my USB that's nagware is WordZap (which isn't included in the Database) and that's cause it's a time-waster game.

Taking MiDoJo expressed view as departing point, I have no problem with a .Net dependency as long as it is kept as basic as possible, currently meaning 2.0 -- since it seems to be present by default in all Windows Vista+ and most probably is installed too in XP. Of course, given several portable options, I'll always prefer the one with the least dependencies...

As for the nagware issue, which I don't compound with the more prevalent donationware category, I am totally averse to applications that incorporate any such feature. IMHO, it's a matter of confidence: any developer has the right to derive monetary profit from the software he assembles, but if s/he saw fit to so intrude in her/his users' systems, then that is a doomed relationship right from the start -- because whenever the going gets tough(er), I firmly believe that s/he'll be more inclined to take further initiatives that don't have her/his users best interests in mind...

So and to sum it up, I'm OK with unobtrusive donationware, but I absolutelly refuse to use any nagware and I think it should always be clearly flagged as such.

I think this qualifies as "Nagware" because if you have to pay money to get full use of the program without annoyances, it's not freeware. One exception is FileZilla and Transmission (two of my favorite file transfer clients): these nag you every few times you start the program, but provide the option "don't ask again".

Site policy is (as far as I know) anti-nagware based on the entries for Disk Digger and SilentNight Micro CD Burner.

Personally, if its a program you use once in a great while and does something really fantastic, I'd be willing to use nagware. If its daily use, I'd start looking for something else. I used to love WinZip but the nag screen drove me crazy.

Myportablesoftware apps were discussed before here, here, and here.

Warning!

Do not run any of Myportablesoftware crapware. It's nagware / donationware. Upon 1st run, this window will show up:
2013-06-08_163033.jpg
a click on "CONTINUE" or on the X in the top right corner will download some "bundleware" junk (a.k.a better installer) onto your machine. Better Installer store files at AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\macromedia.com\support\flashplayer\sys\#static.bisrv.com\settings.sol and at AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\N2G7MKKV\static.bisrv.com\js\libs\storage.swf

Should you still want to test any of the apps by Myportablesoftware without having to download/install crap on your nachine, create an appsname.ini in the application folder e.g. My_Screen_Capture.ini and add the following:

Code: Select all

lastInstalledVer=1.41
checkUpdate=N

I didn't really care back when it required a donation, but that installation happens even when you click "X" to me is a red flag: that you can't say no to the prompt is misleading and dishonest. I pulled this and all other myportablesoftware programs out of the Submission thread and added a disclaimer to the thread title.
