My interest comes from issues with my current laptop with a bug in it's power management settings at the same time that my system is almost always running at 100%. I started looking for workarounds to save battery life.
Monitor
- PushMonitOff: probably the best solution so far - dead simple and very low memory usage. Unfortunately many wireless mice will occasionally ping the computer and cause it to think there's activity, waking the screen. I usually unplug my mouse when I walk away. Also, it doesn't lock the screen.
- MonOff4 - also works great as a screensaver, but that's 10 mins from now.
Power Scheduling
Automation programs that put the computer into a low power state after a specified amount of time could also be called power saving.

Other untested programs I've researched:
- Granola Personal (Windows and Linux) - Portability unknown

http://www.ghacks.net/2010/05/01/save-e ... h-granola/ - Smart Power (not portable, runs as service, requires dotNET)
http://www.ghacks.net/2010/09/13/smart- ... ing-rules/ - LocalCooling (abandonware, couldn't UniExtract)

- Granola Personal (Windows and Linux) - Portability unknown
Suggestions or experiences with this type of thing?
