Jitsi (previously SIP Communicator) is an audio/video and chat communicator that supports protocols such as SIP, XMPP/Jabber, AIM/ICQ, Windows Live, Yahoo! and many other useful
features.

Reasons why this is posted in the discussion subforum:
1)
The program is Java based.
2) A JRE is included in the package (which I think is not allowed).
3) Although it seems portable and stealth, my test was superficial: I don't have SIP, Facebook, Yahoo!, Windows Live, Jabber, ICQ, AIM or Bonjour accounts (despite appearances, I don't live inside a Tupperware).

With that lack of online social activity, no one would guess it...

I've seen this a few times but obviously didn't look close enough:
* Wideband audio
* Call Encryption, OTR Chat Encryption
* Multi-user voice chats
* Integration with Microsoft Outlook and Apple Address Book
* Presence Integration with Microsoft Outlook: make calls, start chats and see your contacts’ presence from within Microsoft Outlook
* Support for LDAP directories and Google Contacts
* [Probably the biggest one] Cross protocol conference calls: call your contacts over different accounts and protocols and join them in a single conference call.
* Out for Win/Mac/Linux
That's a monster. Good find.

The program recently (or at least since the last time I tested it) added some WebRTC (video conference) components and desktop sharing, which is bringing it into the space of an open source competitor to Skype.
The portable version mentioned in the initial post was uploaded to SF.net but hasn't been updated in a year.

Old thread update:
This program is still seeing active updates and seems like a very strong open message program, but not much happening on the portability side. As far as the official team, there was a request for portable version:
https://github.com/jitsi/jitsi/issues/128 … but unfortunately doesn’t look like that got any interest. Although it was brought up over at PA, it doesn’t look like there’s much movement:

The latest version of
Jitsi -
2.8.5426, cannot connect to Facebook and Yahoo- Facebook switched from
XMPP (
Jabber) to a proprietary protocol while Yahoo seems to try to obstruct other clients to connect to their network. Anyway, it is a pity that Jitsi developers neglect the requests for a portable edition of their messenger, which is not bad at all.
A screen-shot of the Yahoo connection error:
- Jitsi 2.8.5426 - 2016-02-17 - Yahoo error - 001.png (8.06 KiB) Viewed 26327 times
I am tempted to use a four-letter obscene word for both Facebook and Yahoo. As for Yahoo, they seem to do their best to go the way of the dodo.

Just re-discovered
Jitsi, still one of the most interesting online video chatting solutions out there.
You don't even need to download a program anymore, just point your favorite browser to
https://meet.jit.si/, share with partners by whichever means and chat away.
On the software side,
Jitsi is FLOSS multi-platform software, available on every platform there is; just take a look at
https://jitsi.org/downloads/.
Although I haven't really tested any of the Windows builds, it looks like
Jitsi switched of late from being Java based to being Electron based, so there's still a con there -- although in the present case it might be entirely justified.
[Jitsi stands for] Multi-platform open-source video conferencing. At Jitsi, we believe every video chat should look and sound amazing, between two people or 200. Whether you want to build your own massively multi-user video conference client, or use ours, all our tools are 100% free, open source, and WebRTC compatible.
Jitsi Meet is an open-source (Apache) WebRTC JavaScript application that uses Jitsi Videobridge to provide high quality, secure and scalable video conferences. [...] On the client side, no installation is necessary. You just point your browser to the URL of your deployment.
WebRTC does not provide a way of conducting multi-party conversations with end-to-end encryption. Unless you consistently compare DTLS fingerprints with your peers vocally, the same goes for one-to-one calls. As a result, your stream is encrypted on the network but decrypted on the machine that hosts the bridge when using Jitsi Meet.
The Jitsi Meet architecture allows you to deploy your own version, including all server components. In that case, your security guarantees will be roughly equivalent to a direct one-to-one WebRTC call. This is the uniqueness of Jitsi Meet in terms of security.

Update: project seems to be going strong, now at v2.10. Not seeing any changes in portability options, though there was a configuration option listed by user
chrassig in the Github portability thread mentioned above:
