I would probably try the torrent client Vuze (http://www.vuze.com/). One of the major problems with torrent files is that when they're partially downloaded, they're badly fragmented because torrents just download whatever's available from whoever's offering it. I recall the Vuze project working hard to overcome this so they could become a media serving powerhouse, and they might have some advanced preview tools built in that could help.

An AVI-type file will usually play after you run it through DivFix or something similar, but I'm pretty sure you need the "top and tail" ie the first ?? bytes and the last ?? bytes, there is an option in uTorrent for this.

MPEG files usually do not need any special treatment, they just play.

I'm not sure where MP4 falls though, it's an MPEG container, but you can use any codec.
