Shooter Media Player - competition for VLC ?
Shooter Media Player - competition for VLC ?
Found an interesting review of SPlayer on gHacks ...
http://www.ghacks.net/2009/11/24/splaye ... ia-player/
Have no PC of my own right now and in an internet cafe so can't test this app for usefulness or portability.
I plan to keep a keen eye on this as it sounds very promising.
Smaller, faster, low mem footprint and open source.
Would be curious to hear feedback from other TPFC members.
Particularly anyone that can check for portability.

Re: Shooter Media Player - competition for VLC ?
It's not really portable.
It saves settings to the registry and it writes a file or two in %APPDATA%. The 7zip "portable" package includes a .bat file (named with Chinese characters) that deletes the settings from the registry, but without saving those settings anywhere.
I wasn't that hopeful after looking at their "comparison chart". They've ignored the best media players (VLC, MPlayer, and MPC), and they just made subjective statements about how the apps compare, rather than reporting objective, measurable differences. It's obvious that they're not confident enough about the quality of the program to publish a serious comparison.
That said, I do like the interface - the semi-transparent menu bars that appear when you hover the mouse over the window make sense. I didn't play with it much after seeing it wasn't portable.
If you try it out outside of Sandboxie, it asks you in Chinese to set it as the default player on first startup - choose the middle button. To get it to display in English, right-click and hover over the menu items until you see the "Language" entry.

Re: Shooter Media Player - competition for VLC ?
i've tried the new version (3.5). it doesn't write to the registry if you uncheck the file associations, it only creates a folder called 'Splayer' in %APPDATA%.
i guess i can make a .bat which will move this folder to SPlayer dir and back when the app opens / closes (if anyone's interested)
(at least that's how i can do it..if you have something else in mind plz share it..)

Re: Shooter Media Player - competition for VLC ?
We could consider to contact its authors to improve an official release of it.. it could be a good portable solution..

I have contacted the author and asked to improve the software to a fully portable version. He answered me, now I'm waiting an second answer (to store also history and other files in software folder instead of the system one).

Just gave it a try and I like it! More handier for me than KMPlayer or PotPlayer. I guess I'll portablize it for my own pleasure

Re: Shooter Media Player - competition for VLC ?
i just tried the Portable version from the main site.
Someone mentioned a .bat file that supposedly cleans up after itself, but that's not true.
Even after restarting my computer, it missed a lot of registry entries:
And of course as mentioned earlier, 'SPlayer' folder is created in AppData>Roaming.
p.s.
auto update is on by default, it launches right as soon as you start the program. my firewall went haywire.
