Download still available at 8:30 am (GMT+1, DST) on May 25th. Either the time limit has been extended, or these are the longest three days of my life.

GeddichNixan You stated
It works portably (I tried it)
Do you mean settings are not sent to the registry? Or do you mean portable as in it will work from a flash-drive?

Thanks

I mean it in the simplest and least sophisticated way:

I installed it into a sandbox, copied the app folder to another location and ran it. It worked. I have no idea where it's settings go.

That was what I meant as I wrote: "...but I did not test whether it is stealth (or better: to what extent is it stealth)."

Greetings

(or better: to what extent is it stealth)
When the application doesn't write outside of it's Application Folder e.g. %APPDATA%, Registry or %WINDIR% So if the developer stores the applications configuration in %APPDATA%\APPNAME then this is not stealth.
Of course when testing an application, it will generate standard registry keys, but this is down to the Windows OS storing recently open files etc. something which is beyond the control of any Portable Freeware developer.

It reads the registry a whole lot (~200,000 times) and creates some keys and values, but these seem to be tests to see that it can write to the registry, they are immediately deleted.

It does some reading and writing of paths in some keys that I have noticed in a couple of apps (similar to this: http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... 028#p23028), but they can be ignored.

It also writes some temp files and does a write permission test in %systemroot%, this file is deleted too though.

So by my reckoning, it's portable.

USBCrypt
  • June 3, 2010

USBCrypt is a powerful software encryption utility that you can use to password-protect your USB and other removable and fixed drives with strong AES encryption. The encrypted drives can be used with other computers that do not have USBCrypt software installed.

USBCrypt can protect any USB, flash, or thumb drive supported by Windows. The protected drives can be used to store any kind of files and documents: texts, spreadsheets, financial files, videos, MP3s, etc. The option to create a “spare key” file, to be used in case you forget your password, is also available.

Does this mean "no admin rights required"? As far as I know many encription apps work on computers on which they are not installed but instead of being installed on the those computers they require admin rights in order to be able to run some services for the on the fly encription.

Thanks donald. I didn't check their website, but I supposed it would need admin rights. In that case it has roughly the same features as TrueCrypt or similar apps have. Right?
