Out of curiosity (and this is open to everyone, not just the author), what is 'average' resource usage (mainly concerned with RAM) compared with, oh I dunno let's pick a launcher application at random like ToolBox ? I was surprised to see that PStart uses quite a bit of RAM (9MB in my case, with abo...

Why even bother with Wine in this scenario, if all you want to do is surf the net, read email and some occasional word processing then Puppy Linux is fine as a stand-alone OS. For me the purpose of using BartPE (or something like it) would be as a temporary Windows desktop replacement. Thus, If my f...

You are right but my main point was that the Skype update program (If it can be called a program) seems to have no intelligence whatsoever. It doesn't seem to have any concept of the fact that the program could be installed somewhere other than C. In fact, it seems like it does no more than check yo...

This might be a stupid question but how do people here usually go about updating their existing portable incarnations of Skype? Usually if Skype tells me that there is an update available it ends up downloading and installing the new version to my fixed disk. I then have to manually overwrite skype....

I haven't had time to verify it myself because of exams but I'm sure it will work its way into the database eventually.

Most impressive... start them young, it's the best way to learn! I'm assuming that your son used online tools to create the webpage? If he's really interested in that sort of thing, and wants to get into further then the portable version of the WYSIWYG HTML editor NVU , might be worth a download. Fo...

Oh this brings back memory of the good old days of ZX Spectrums when you could actually buy dedicated hardware for the purpose of 'peeking' and 'poking' at memory addresses. I would that if this is a valid app (i.e. it is portable) then there shouldn't be any reason why this shouldn't be included in...

... of course I don't want to completely scare people away from Windows, otherwise there'd be no purpose for this website! However, these days it seems common for people to have Linux on their older, less powerful laptops and then use Windows on their desktops. With more and more software be...

There's actually a whole slew of them but Puppy and DSL are probably the most popular among those who have slower/older machines. Ubuntu, Mephis, ALinux, Slax, Knoppix are to name but a few. However, these tend to be much bigger and are more aimed as a Windows competitor, rather than just an alterna...

theres also KMPlayer and DSL , which is a 50meg Linux that can be run from a Live-CD, I didn't mention KMPlayer since I would not class it as lightweight, although I gather from this forum that it has quite a following. As far as DSL goes, it was the first live CD I tried and it really did impress ...

@Andrew Incidentally, I noted that the official MPlayer website offers a GUI based MPlayer version for Windows, but the GUI version I downloaded some time ago was not from the MPlayer website. Is this a different GUI, from the ones listed in the PF database? Perhaps, it would be easier for users to ...

You might also want to check out MPlayer if you're looking for something more lightweight. It certainly supports all of the movie formats you're after (and like VLC... and then some) and I'm fairly confident it supports audio CD too (what media player that was worth its salt wouldn't!). Now if you'r...

I can personally vouch for GreenBrowser, it is my browser of choice if I want to use an IE based browser (mainly for compatibility issues). This Chart shows which mediums and formats that VLC supports. The short answer to your question is yes, you could uninstall the three programs you mentioned and use VLC to retain the functionality of the three programs combined. It supports DVDs, Audio CDs and Mov files (QuickTime MOVies) among the...
