Disk Catalog Tools

On occasion, I like to use a disk catalog tool. I've primarily been using Cathy but I notice that it is on the "denied" list since it writes entries to the registry.

Can anyone suggest a portable alternative with comparable functionality?

A similar topic came up on an Avant Browser forum and I came up with similar arguments to Andrew. If people block your links and don't generate income for you then that is your fault; you have a bad business model. It's a bit like someone selling mini oxygen tanks in convenient pocket packs and then...

To do delete system/app temp files and other junk I use the excellent DiskCleaner . It has many plugins for popular applications, so it can delete some unecessary files that haven't been generated by Windows itself, as well as the usual Windows Internet Explorer junk and temp folder stuff. To clean ...

The type of tool you are describing sounds familiar to me but I can't seem to find it on the web. As an alternative you could consider using OpenOffice and save in Microsoft format. I believe that OO only saves necessary metadata and nothing that could be considered an infringement of privacy. You c...

Still having a few problems remaining logged in myself. It's really bizarre and I can't seem to figure any consistent behaviour to reproduce the problem. I've noticed that I usually after returning to a computer that has powered down, sometimes (but not all the time) I get logged out and then I have...

Analog Clock with Alarm

I spent a long time trying to find an alarm clock that could play MP3 files and that also could display an analog clock. I found quite a few but many of them either used the registry or were just excessively big (IMHO) for the task they were designed to perform. ThroughClock is a portable analog clo...

System Monitoring Toolbar

Anyone know of any alternatives to the system monitoring utilities Statbar or winbar ? I read on the Winbar forum that it doesn't actually store it's settings in the registry but this could have been for an older version. To be honest, I've never bothered to use Winbar because I actually prefer Stat...

You can also achieve the same thing with vSubst , although I haven't fully tested this out myself. Generally speaking, I use the launcher application PStart , to open my portable applications, since it allows me to use relative paths, which are valid whatever the drive letter. I also use the folder ...

I can confirm that AceMoney is not portable, it stores settings in the registry. The clue was the batch file in the AceMoney directory, which is for exporting the relevant registry keys, so that you can backup your settings! :?

Scribus - desktop publishing

[ Moderator note : this is the primary Scribus program thread. View database entry ] ---- Yesterday I was trying to find a comprehensive but free desktop publishing solution. Since this isn't the type of thing I use all of the time I certainly don't want to pay hundreds of dollars for one of the po...

Andrew, maybe you could put a sticky at the top of this forum topic with the list of popular software, known not to be portable at this moment in time. (Some people might arrive directly at the forum without first checking the main website).

What's the best alternative? If it's an emergency or you just want to verify a computer for first use then you could try HouseCall from TrendMicro, which is a free online-based scanner. Apparently, HouseCall also supports some distributions of Linux and should work with most browsers including Fire...
