no-defender (av utility)
no-defender is a small CLI utility for a very specific purpose -- let's just heed its author... A slightly more fun way to disable Windows Defender (through the WSC API). With a little bit of reverse engineering, I turned this service into a service that could add my own stuff there. Limitations Sa...

Re: Signal - cross-platform secure messaging (64-bit only)
There's now somewhat of an official response from Signal 's CEO to Durov's allegations above ... Meredith Whittaker has had it with the "frat house" contingent of the tech industry. I sat down with the President of Signal at VivaTech in Paris to go over the wide range of serious, grown-up ...

Re: Dark mode
There's still the issue of lack of visual feedback distinguishing visited vs non-visited links What color scheme do you have in mind? I suspect this might have been a design decision from tproli, 'cos I have seen a lot of websites presented this way. If it's by design, never mind me, then... I just...

Re: Dark mode
That logo image should also be fully transparent, perhaps, but with black text changed to white. But it's already transparent and that's exactly why it happens - because it was designed with a black text over a transparent background. In my CSS I've chosen the lightest dark shade background to coun...

Gifski (animated GIF compressor)
First mentioned by Nickesm (https://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=94656#p94656) Gifski looked interesting for its purpose, as it also advertised a Windows GUI version -- which sadly I couldn't make work; it executed alright with no patent error and then just stayed in memory withou...

Re: Dark mode
As a user of Windows 10 dark theme, here's how TPFC looks right now for me (logged in)... https://i.postimg.cc/x14fpHwX/TPFC-Screenshot-2024-05-23.png Blue highlight on blue links isn't the most readable choice, IMHO. That logo image should also be fully transparent, perhaps, but with black text cha...

Mercury (Firefox browser fork)
Mercury recent came to my attention due to its native portability builds and instructions... It's the work of the same dev behind the Thorium Chrome builds (posted by rbon in the " XP compatible software " topic; https://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=106760#p106760) and ...

Re: Is it time to stop highlighting 32-bit over 64-bit and possibly stop the distinction at all?
While I think your suggestion has merit and I agree overall -- back then I was even on the forefront of promoting 64-bit software adoption here -- I totally disagree with sun-setting any 32-bit entries... I mean first and foremost 64-bit versions should be the default by now but the existence of any...

Re: Signal - cross-platform secure messaging (64-bit only)
I agree. But those allegations are far from unbelievable, especially coming from where they come... and too much has happened over the years to allow any side's claims to be taken purely on good faith. For a case in point in another quadrant, just consider the impending TikTok ban. These are juggern...

Re: Signal - cross-platform secure messaging (64-bit only)
Another Signal -related news item, as reported by Pavel Durov , Telegram's CEO ( verbatim ): 🤫 A story shared (https://x.com/jack/status/1787895769183268948) by Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter, uncovered that the current leaders of Signal, an allegedly “secure” messaging app, are activists used ...

Well, it's double affirmative because it's actually an official feature that was based on a previous discussion is this very thread. This FAQ explains how to do it and you can also see it in the comparison table . Thanks for enlightening me -- I hadn't caught that feature, I'll have to look into it...
