Re: What is best Anti-virus, spyware, malware?

I wish that I had started this discussion with that question. It does explain why we are diametrically opposed on this issue. I understand the MAC point of view, also the Linux point of view. Both of which, don't have near the issues with malware. I have been coming from the Microsoft point of view....

Re: What is best Anti-virus, spyware, malware?

So briefly, what's your advice to the single mom down the street who's buying her first computer for her college-level boys to use? (in terms that she'll understand)

Re: What is best Anti-virus, spyware, malware?

After years of following this site with its expert level moderators (at least in my opinion), I put reasonable faith in the cleanliness of stuff that I get from here—this I allow Z/A to look at without sandboxing it first. When picking up stuff from other sites or when I have to package it up to be ...

Re: What is best Anti-virus, spyware, malware?

Lyx, your rant is certainly passionate, I'll give you that much. Given the nature of your prose, it appears that you have limited exposure to the nature of the likes of ZoneAlarm and commercial level security packages. It suffices to say that given my experience as a seasoned software engineer for 2...

Re: What is best Anti-virus, spyware, malware?

I think that some of you are continuing to miss the issue with viruses. You that think you understand the basic principles of trust and computing...never trust anything unless you are buying a machine and never loading any software...period. Malware (the term used to describe spyware, viruses, etc.)...

Re: About USB Hard Disks (not Flash)

I'll tell you what, Flash drives are convenient and nothing else. They have a crippled life expectancy and are painfully slow when transferring large files. I have been using a USB powered 250GB laptop HDD stuffed into a case no larger than the drive for about 5 years now. As it fits into any pocket...

Re: What is best anti-virus software for computer protection?

Well Carbonize, although I share your disdain for those two products, I mentioned them because, by an extreme margin, they unfortunately remain the enterprise-level trusted security product champions in the U.S.A. and that is not an opinion. As far as the Av Comparatives list, I have never heard of ...

Re: What is best anti-virus software for computer protection?

Zone Alarm has long been considered the best-of-breed for antispyware, and antivirus. It fell out of favor for a short time because they had been using the Computer Associates anti-virus engine. Once that had surfaced, they acquired the Kaspersky engine and rose to the top again. In addition, it inc...

It wasn't clear to me, is this stealthy and/or portable? I saw references to Linux, but does it run on Windows? There are lots of implications but nothing written explicitly.

m^(2),
Given this scenario, it appears that you are on the right track. I don't see a more elegant solution.

Re: Recommend me a scripting language

m^(2), did you try the Stani editor (SPE)? Actually, movepy comes with three editors, SPE, Idle, and Pythonwin. Idle is a command line editor for lack of a better description. Pythonwin and SPE are both graphical IDEs. Pythonwin is a text editor with a few conveniences. SPE is the most robust IDE th...

Re: How do you update your Portable Collection?

I have about 1200 (+/-100) applications on my portable drive now. I used to keep up with updates. As the collection grew, it became obvious that keeping it current was foolish. Therefore, I adopted the current discipline: My applications are grouped by purpose into folders and every app has its own ...
