Also:

I am totally in love with Rainlendar but...

- Essential PIM (probably the best calendar) - adds other functions and a little bit smoother in terms of usability than Sunbird
- Sunbird calendar - super simple
- Thunderbird with lightning installed - adds mail functions to Sunbird (or, more accurately, calendar functions to a mail client)

Rainlendar is easily the best and has the advantage of being able to sync with Outlook if you need it to (in the pro version). Its status as Portable of late has come under question as they're no longer distributing a specifically "portable" version where there's an option at install (as described here: http://www.pendriveapps.com/portable-calendar-rainlendar/).

Not sure what the status is on that.

Where it write settings? Because the standalone version allow to change some options, but don't save any file in its folder.

try Stickies it is a very good app and can be fully portable

You can set any sound in the .wav format to play at an alarm or on waking
(just set the relative path to the folder)

the sticky note can flash alternating yellow and red to get attention and
it will be on top of whatever is on screen

reoccurring stickies and onetime stickies are possible
as well as setting a sticky note to remind you once it has been asleep for a certain amount of time

They wrote me that it will be removed the folder creation and that the key is only for window position. So probably the next release will be fully portable.

UltraExplorer V1.5.0 as listed in the database here is quite outdated (as well as this version was not really portable).

The current Version is available at http://mustangpeak.net (under "Download" or the first news entry on the homepage). It has become much more stable and after a long break the development is now pretty fast paced again.

Please note: The setup and the portable (exe) versions are really different. Only the portable version checks for the config files in the UE folder. (Just in case anyone would try )

try rainlendar.

audible alarms + popups with dismiss/snooze options
scheduled events, recurring events, and prioritized 'to do' items
lots of categories in the default skin for sorting events and todo items
easy to use, very stable, and totally portable
and it looks good too. can be skinned, and there are hundreds of skins out there (try deviantart)

Hey all,
I had a friend ask me last night for a program that he can put school assignments and special days in and it will give him an audible alert when that thing is due soon (maybe some other form of alert too, like a pop-up or something). I was looking at programs like ToDoList, but then I saw chobo's thread here and realized I should definitely broaden my scope to calendars too.

Do any of you use a program here on TPFC that has this feature, or know of one? He'll probably need it to be running constantly, so I guess it wouldn't strictly have to be portable. And preferably not too complex - I don't think my friend is that computer-saavy.

I don't quite understand what kind of an automatic alarm feature you need. Taking your example, you can usually set, in a good reminder, an alarm to notify you 4 days before an event and then (more or less conveniently and quickly, depending on the program) manually pick the next date or rather the time intervall (e.g. 2 hours, days, etc. later), at which you want the alarm for the same date to go off again. For me, UK's Kalender still does that best. See the third screenshot on UK's Kalender screenshots link, where it says "Snooze". You pick the number from the drop down list, choose either "Minutes", "Hours", etc. for the next reminder and you are done. The program got still a lot more options for setting reminders that I mostly don't use. It's one of the few programs that I allow to start up automatically on my computer.

There's something like a plugin for ToDoList at http://www.codeproject.com/KB/applications/TDLReminderTool.aspx. It's called ToDoList Reminder Tool, and from the picture there, it looks like this might be possible (with an option for "Remind every ___ ___" - 30 minutes or whatever). I gotta admit I haven't tried it yet though.

But this is a very timely forum topic; somebody was just asking me yesterday for a planner with an audio alarm, and these look like some potential ones! I'll take a look sometime at the one Napiophelios suggested...

Not only it works with FileMenuTools (and Q-Dir) in a portable manner, but it is only 2 seconds configuration time!

Simply AMAZING!

P.S. I'm so mad at you because I have to transfer all my programs from my old PStart now! Just kidding!

v2.0 has a nasty bug. The author fixed the bug but last version is still not up on sourceforge. He offered an alternative download link for version 2.0.1 that fixes the crash bug:

Agreed -- coffee is (so far in my testing) an excellent program. I'm so glad someone's working on it. I'm fairly sure all of the posts I've put up on the site will function with Coffee as it has a similar config system to CAFE.

I used JPE on older versions in the past
but they proclaim it to portable on its own now.

It doesnt make any reg entries but older versions would leave an appdata folder with setting backups and such.

I will try this new one and let you know.

EDIT: yup its much smoother to open and work with now
and its portable

Maybe you can try Desktop Gather, which can set the alarm at anytime you want. You can also choose the frequency and the way of the alarm.
