Your initial post indicated using 7-Zip without the PAF format in which case settings are stored in the registry.

7-Zip Portable will backup any local 7-Zip registry settings which allows the portable 7-Zip (PAF) to use that registry key to R/W settings to and when finished will restore the local 7-Zip registry key backup

Ruby had already told me that I am incorrect, 7-Zip Portable writes its vital settings to the Windows registry.
Now, either you must prove that you are correct or Ruby must prove himself or herself correct. I don't care who is correct. Just tell the entire truth about how 7-Zip Portable write its vital settings.

Used winzip for ages, and moved to 7zip a couple of years ago. This program blows me away, does everything ive ever wanted without all the extra baggage. Got to be one of the absolute best portable freeware ever. Cant go wrong here, and no im not on their payroll....

I am humbled, embarrassed and bitch-slapped.
I apologize to you and everyone else who trusts and uses 7-Zip Portable.

I also am removing 7-Zip Portable from all of my portable drives!
You admission that 7-Zip Portable requires the Windows registry to store vital software settings prove to me that 7-Zip is not portable! I wonder if anyone else has figured out this fatal flaw!
I have switched to BandiZip Portable for my portable file archiver needs.

Every once in a while this program just blows me away. Frequently it doesn't have much of an advantage over ZIP, but I had a stack of 8 very similar Excel files (the already-somewhat-compressed XLSX format) in one directory. The zip file took up 4.3 megs, while the 7z of the same files took up 0.8 megs. Wow.

I have successfully found a way to make 7-Zip portable without the silly aid of Portable Application Format (.paf) or winPenPack�s X-Launcher. By eliminating all of the unnecessary language files and keeping the file of my own language (en.ttt), moving en.ttt to the main 7-Zip directory, deleting the lang directory, and eliminating everything else until only the following files are left in a temporary directory,

7zFM.exe
7zG.exe
7z.dll
7-zip.chm
7z.sfx
en.ttt

7-Zip can be used portably without any problem on my system. I first tested this by using Revo Uninstaller to wipe 7-Zip desktop off my system first, and then, ran 7-Zip from a temporary directory. Everything worked just fine for me! With all of the unnecessary software files out of the way, I am happy I have reduced the portable 7-Zip directory down to 1.831 Megabytes. This is a lot better than the 6 Megabyte listing!

Me too, i had:

7-Zip cannot find the code that works with archives.

I copied the 7z.dll (447,488 bytes) to C:\Windows\System32 and it solved the error immediately without rebooting or anything else. I know it's not in the spirit of portable software, but at least it fixes the error.

Whenever I try to run extracted files from different 7-Zip versions (latest try: 9.20), the 7-Zip File Manager runs fine, but no archive operations succeed; I always get error messages such as "7-Zip cannot find the code that works with archives" and "7-Zip cannot load 7-zip.dll" no matter what I do. Any solutions?

If you're going to use the 7-Zip Theme Manager, I recommend using v2.0.
v2.1 is rather buggy!

I tested many archivers and decided toi keep 7Zip. The only con to me is extracting an archive: a new folder is not created simply writing a new extraction path, but I have to browse and click on a button before extracting the archive. It's not a big problem, but it's annoying.

I love 7-Zip but if, like me and plenty of others out there, you think the default filetype icons are really boring and the File Manager toolbar buttons are a little plain and would like an easy peasy way of changing either or both there is a neat little free program called 7-Zip Theme Manager. You can change the filetype icons and the File Manager button icons. You can even create your own themes if look at the current themes (unhide all files) and can figure out what you need. If you want to find out what's in a gargantuan .RAR file set, you download the first file and un-RAR it. When you try that with 7zip, it takes a giant dump when it can't find the rest of the files -- I had to use Task Manager to kill it. (the "cancel" option was obviously modeled after Microsoft code -- it ignores the user completely)

It's also slower than continental drift!

It's not really a self-extracting ZIP file any more, it's an installer, though it just copies to whatever directory you tell it without modifying registry or the rest of the filesystem

(@ mr M) Just out of curiosity, what is the purpose of a password protected RAR with the password in an unprotected comment? Isn't that a bit like locking your house and then taping the key to the door?

Don't forget, either, that 7z is an open format (read by many free and non-free software), 7-Zip itself is free software and (here's the bit that I love) 7-Zip can double as a dual-pane file manager (under the View menu, select "2 Panels").

It also works under Wine

I found 7zip to be very useful in most cases.
It's weakness is in handling password protected RARs
Unfortunately 7zip does not allow RAR archive's contents or comments to be viewed without the password even when allowed to do so in WinRar.
This is frustrating when the comments within the RAR shows the password.
I was hoping if anyone knows of any portable app that can view the comments without a password?

While 7-zip is a useful program, and I make quite a
lot of use of it, including the command line version
"zip.exe", I also use the older EnZip (which is not
trully portable, I accept). It displays filesizes
to 2 decimal places and allows the compression settings
to be varied when using drag and drop. It is also a
little more convenient to use when dragging and dropping.
