I've tried IcoFX a few times in the past with terrible results. Moments after trying this one...instant success! Simple and easy to use. I've made tons of icons since I downloaded this the other day. Keep in mind, though, that for most hard and solid state drives, there's no effective difference in space used between a 1406 byte file and a 198 byte one, since all files occupy an entire cluster even if they have only one byte. You can quickly find the cluster size for a given drive by right clicking on a very small file (< 500 bytes), selecting properties, and taking note of the Size on Disk property in the property sheet.

Of course, if you're planning to embed your fonts into a portable executable (exe, dll, etc.), then a 32-bit icon could indeed make a big difference, particularly if you were planning to embed hundreds of them. UPXing the PE woudldn't help either, since it usually skips compressing the icon resources. In that situation, you might want to use a workaround such as using a different graphic editor to force the color depth down to 2-8 bits (XnView is particularly well suited for that task, since it has a feature to specify the transparent color in the color table before saving the file). FastStone's editor also does a pretty good job, but you won't know if the converted file is still transparent until after it's saved (so always make a backup!) IrfanView is of course the quickest and most straightforward, but I've had some difficulty getting it preserve transparency in color depth reduced icons.

Incidentally, if bloat is a concern (as well it should be), remember to only unpack the locale translation files you're actually going to need from the zip, or if you already unpacked all, delete the unneeded ones. If your cluster size is 4k, this will save you about 350k for this app, and potentially hundreds of megabytes if you did this for all the installed apps on your system. Find Everything is very helpful in this effort since you can use Regular Expressions to find them all at once while still being able to exclude false matches. Generally, most locale files and folders contain [a-z]{2,3} | [a-z]{2}-{2} | [0-9a-f]{3,4} either by itself or at the end of some string point to locale files and folders. Just be careful not to delete the files you actually need (and it's never a good idea to remove en-US, usually listed as one of en|ENU|en-US|1033|409|C). Also, programs that were installed using Windows Installer tend to "self-repair" (i.e., reinstall the bloat you try to remove), so you might want to leave those alone or better still, see if its equivalent is available on this site so you can uninstall the MSI version.

Tom

When you select 1-bit icons, you HAVE to use black & white -- you cannot choose, for example, red & white even though that's also 1-bit (two colors). As soon as you select a non-black color, the icon format jumps to 32-bit, which bloats the icon file size from 198 bytes to 1406 bytes.
