I first got the registry cleaned of unnecessary entries and then defragmented them, making the registry files [USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT - I think :-) ] MUCH SMALER, resulting in better performance in overall. I hope this is gonna be what I get after trying this stuff for the first time "outside" the W95, wish me luck ;-D

Zandy

PageDefrag from SysInternals?

Gutmann

I think that the new release 2.35 is nagware and writes rubbish in the registry... But the startup is about 30s - 60s. You can't feel the difference of 1s.
Second, cleaning the registry is veeery dangerous. A lot of times and a lot of formats made me understand to even not download them. Magazines and sites says "Very good software". I do use them to hunt down specific problems (such as uninstall that didn't work 100% and is interfering with the system ops, like Norton often does), but that's it, and even then I am extra cautious.

I have used programs like NTREGOPT which only compresses the registry and doesn't alter what's in it.

linuxamp

GBJ, you have to weigh out that decision.
Cleaning your registry may make you feel better but has almost no effect on performance/stability. Maybe all I save is a bit of file space, but why have useles registry keys and values from deleted programs cluttering up your registry ? Sort of like cleaning out the garage now and then.
